Hasbro Transformers Generations Twintwist Action FigureThe new Twintwist ain't bad - I remember the original toy and his brother Topspin being somewhat reviled back when they first came out, although today I'd probably jump at the chance to get Autobots or Decepticons in the main line which did something unique like that. The toy is Brawl with new deco, a new weapon, and a new head - and it's pretty good, because it reminds me of the tanks in that game Spectre.

Able to turn into a combiner arm or leg, Topspin makes a pretty good tank and a decent enough robot. With precious few toys marketed actively as a member of the Wreckers, odds are your fan cred will demand you buy this toy regardless of quality. Thankfully, it's pretty good - increasingly goofy with the weapons stacked on it, but good all the same.

In vehicle mode, you've got a decent hover tank. There are no wheels, and it feels small despite not being all that tiny. The 4 1/4-inch long vehicle has a rotating turret with double barrels on top, plus a hole to mount a 5mm peg in there. Brawl originally came with a small pistol you could hide in there, but Twintwist has a giant geared gun you can press down on that spins - and that original small gun can plug in to that, resulting in a preposterous accessory. I love it, but my sample is sort of wonky. Pushing down on the light grey gun on top of the geared weapon results in spinning, but it's grindy - assuming that is a word we can use.

The blue tank has an orange Autobot symbol on the side, plus light blue and orange highlights. It's pretty gorgeous.

Transforming this one is a snap - the legs and arms fold in quite easily, so getting it from one mode to the other should prove simple as long as you realize there's more kibble than you might like.

The robot mode works for me, minus the neck - shoving the head in the body and pulling it out is difficult, and it feels like it's sort of crammed in the torso. It literally does not sit right with me, but thankfully the limbs are pretty good and aside from the toes, the joints are largely nice and tight. Oddly, his chest Autobot symbol is about the same size as the head - I love a nice big one, but this is in danger of overshadowing the all-new face sculpt. I'm told the head was meant to resemble G1 Twin Twist, but if you told me it was supposed to be a Megatron I'd also believe you. The detail is nice enough and the deco is sharp - check out the silver face, blue eyes, and gunmetal grey brow. His subtle sculpted lips are a nice touch, too, and the head is just overall fantastic. The painting, plastic, and sculpting all come together to make a quality noggin that just makes you mad when you see cruddy silver or limp grey plastic being used on other toy heads. It's gorgeous.

This is my fourth version of this mold - the first three of which were basically green and basically the same damn thing - so a new head and a new color really makes me happy here. I would go as far as to say I like this more than the many Brawls Hasbro put out in 2012, so get it if you can. It's nice and strange, and it's not like Hasbro is going to give us all-new Voyager-class versions of these guys with chrome guns or anything. I'd appreciate if they did, though, but for now I'll just be happy with this guy and his nutty guns.
