I was not planning on writing up Thundercracker, mostly because Starscream [FOTD #2,081] was a good-but-not-great figure. It looked wonderful, but there were some parts that popped off and I hate that. Hasbro took the same mold - and same battle damage pattern - and largely swapped the colors around to make a few improvements. The mold has two slight changes - the face is now a big ol' smirk, and the chest panel is less likely to pop off (but still does come off during transformation.) It does not have a metal rod in it.
At a hair under 6 1/2-inches tall at the head, the figure is largely the Starscream repaint you expect. I doesn't have the Decepticon symbols on the fronts of the robot wings, but it does have proper G1 symbols on the back (also visible in plane mode.) The coloring looks great, and I'm very fond of the articulation and transformation. Rotating wrists still aren't a given in this line, so having double-jointed elbows and multiple hip and thigh joints makes it a lot of fun to pose. Also it's sturdy. And you get tilt ankles.
Transformation is the same as before, with the shoulder pylons becoming the front of the jet, the legs tucking under the plane mode, and the result is fine..
The jet brings the same problem we've had with a lot of Starscreams over the years, in which we get a nice robot that turns into a nice plane with a nice robot under it. It doesn't have any play features to speak of other than the 3mm "C.O.M.B.A.T." system ports, allowing you to plug on flames and stuff.
It's a redeco - and there are more coming with Redwing and Skywarp. This likely won't be the last series of Starscream repaints we get in Generations, so get what makes sense for you as we go. I like this goofy vehicle mode a bunch, so even if we do get more Thundercrackers and Starscreams I could just leave these in Cybertron jet mode and be pretty happy. I miss weird sci-fi vehicles, so I'm grateful to have at least a few in this line from time to time.
