With so many Transformers characters getting multiple toys, it's no surprise that this Bulkhead was one of several Hasbro releases based on the character. Fans loved him, but toy buyers didn't exactly jump on this particular release. There were bigger ones, smaller ones, imported ones, non-transforming ones, but this was pretty much what kicked off the character in the world of toys. As Voyager toys go, he's pretty small and quite simple-- the robot mode is similar in size to a deluxe, and at twice the price that may have been a bit much to swallow. I got mine much cheaper, as you can see by the price tag on the box. (Hooray for business trips!)
As a robot, he looks good but lacks some of the color from the cartoon. The colors are a little muted, and the red Autobot logo is now silver, which as the case on most of the Transformers Animated toy line in the USA for some reason. The figure looks great and manages to be bulky and round, avoiding the boxy or overly kibbly look of many figures. Of course, there's some kibble here on his shoulders, which it turned out flipped down as a chair on the cartoon and on the larger toy. Clever! The figure has some stars painted on his shoulders and forearms, plus the head manages to be menacing without being evil. He doesn't exactly read as "cuddly"-- after all, this is the Autobot's premiere artist-- but the blue eyes and wide mouth do give him a little more personality than your average Transformers toy and a heck of a lot more than the movie faces. His fingers open and close, and on his right hand, a wrecking ball can be launched out. It's tethered to his arm, so younger kids won't have to worry about losing it or causing too much damage to the house.
The vehicle is a swell armored vehicle with six rolling wheels and no action features to speak of. It's just a good, solid vehicle. This doesn't happen a lot, and while it may sound boring, it's not. Hasbro doesn't engineer every vehicle to hold together well, and I can't tell you how many cars I have where the wheels don't spin particularly well. As toys go, this is actually a really fun one.
With its simple sculpt and the enormous fan following of the exceptionally fun Transformers Animated cartoon, you might think this is going to be an expensive figure-- it isn't. $10-$25 is about normal, but if I were you I'd hold out for closer to $10. It's not exactly a scarce item, and was quite easy to get during the all-too-short run of Animated.
