A sneak peek! Hydron was handed out at the Mattel event at New York Toy Fair, so some of us got to go with him early - which is great! He's on sale on March 15, so now you can read yet one more review before making the purchase, assuming you're not an all-in subscriber already. The Galactic Protectors of New Adventures rarely get new figures, so this is a bit of a cause for celebration - unless you don't like that show, in which case, come back later.
Reusing a few bits with plenty of new ones, the 7-inch Hydron is a rare aquatic figure in this line - most of them are land, or sky, or cave-based Now Mer-Man has someone to fight - or perhaps Icarius has another buddy to pal around with.
Overall, it's great! In my case the Triton spear gun was horribly misshapen when I took it out of the box, but dipping it in boiling water for a few seconds straightened it right out. (Get your parents permission before you dip your toys in boiling water, kids!) The Horsemen made a weapon that can be held in any of a number of ways - there are two grips on the yellow pointy armament, plus there's a hook so it can connect to his belt. It looks a little silly there, but hey, it's a nice thing to do. There are also a few painted details on there - some very light yellow gold metallic bits can be seen on the rubbery yellow plastic, which really adds some "oomph" here. The same yellow coloring can be seen on his SCUBA stuff, which also glides over the figure nicely.
The figure itself is pretty spiffy - the standard buck is loaded with new parts. Swim fins! New shins! New wrists! A new thigh! Little painted details all over the figure really bring it to life, it's difficult to ignore the painted details on each wrist that are unique to this guy. He's more sci-fi than fantasy, which is probably what you'd want here. Silver highlights on the armor look great too, plus there's the undersea-themed belt covered in red greeblies. Speaking as someone with no real nostalgic love for New Adventures, this is one superbly impressive figure for this line. There's a lot of subtle shading all over the figure, plus little tiny metallic blue bits you probably won't even notice unless you're close enough to snort the figure. With all of the price increases each figure is subject to more scrutiny, but with this one you can totally see why it costs a few extra bucks. The deco, the added tooling, it's all here.
If you subscribed, you're gonna love this figure - it'll be available on Matty Collector in about two weeks. If you haven't started your New Adventures of He-Man collection yet you won't necessarily want to start with this guy. But if you're already on board? You're gonna love it. If you have the bucks, go snag this one. It's not like we're going to see a bunch of other sea-based He-Man guys before the line ends, after all!
