Sometimes people are impatient and figures get rushed, leading to an inferior product. Lord Dactus is not one of these figures. Based on a bat-like race of underground warriors in the 2002 cartoon, this striking and jagged creature is loaded with new parts and pieces - check out those awesome hands, long neck, and clamp-on armor. The figure ships shirtless for some reason or another, so you'll need to put the armor and pop in the wings yourself. The wings were previously used on Draego-Man and Granamyr.
Due to new, extendable legs combined with unusually long ears and an extended neck, the traditionally 7-inch buck has added nearly an inch - making him one of the tallest figures in the line. By combining elements from numerous figures, the overly striking image from the cartoon translates well to the figure style, spiky and giving off a "don't touch me" vibe.
Even though he's not the only bat warrior - or even the only one released last year - he's easily one of the best figures in the line. The sculptors from the Four Horsemen routinely show just how a small change or two can make a big difference, but truth be told this figure has been given sculpting riches beyond compare. The armored hands fit perfectly well on the Skeletor/Zodac wrists, and the new feet make it seem like a completely different creation. Like Draego-Man, this figure has enough heft and shelf appeal to warrant a higher price tag - unfortunately, the blue bat looks like a putz until you take him out of the package and assemble him.
With an all-new sword mold and the armor, it's no surprise there aren't more weapons or bonus parts. I don't know how they would even fit them in the box, It's a pretty amazing feat to see how they squeezed this guy in a standard cardback. He doesn't have the amazing paint job of his peers - there are no surprise rivets on his armor or other bits and pieces of deco - but the face more than makes up for it with orange eyes and huge fangs. This is a figure that stands out, even if you're not a fan of the whole He-Man thing.
While not the best figure in the entire line, I have to expect this one will make nearly everyone's top 10 list in terms of quality and execution. I never though much of the character on the cartoon, but as an action figure this is one of the best things I've had the fortune to crack open in the last few months. If you can find a better fantasy action figure, buy it - there aren't many, so go get this one if the price is right.
