Hasbro has been doing some clever exclusives for Amazon with extensive retooling. The Chop Shop, Barrage, and Malleus Minotaurus set gives you a Solus Prime redeco of Smashdown [FOTD #2,153] along with some clever bug retools. Chop Shop is a retool of Shrapnel, and Barrage is a clever variant transformation (and retool) of Bombshell. These characters are nobodies to most fans, unless you memorized toy catalogs (or had the originals) you probably don't necessarily have a reason to want the Deluxe Decepticons group. And now we've got 3 out of the 4 in the modern line, so we're just waiting for Venom.
This time the figures are part of the Mayhem Attack Squad, with a unique faction market that seems to herald a future Octopunch toy. His tentacles are literally all over the packaging, too. I like what they did here.
I'm surprised they made Wrecker Malleus Minotaurus interesting. This one takes the previously released red toy, and makes it all silver - but adds the insignia of Solus Prime, last seen in Power of the Primes, with a teeny-tiny faction symbol on his bull head. It's a fun toy in and of itself, but to color it to match what I assume will be her colors going forward - it matches her second Prime Master toy - seems a good choice.
It's a fun hammer, it's a cute robot, and it has two blast effects - one of which is new here. The big blast effect was here last time, but a smaller cap - a toupee, if you will - is new here. Also of interest, the colors match 2024 Vector Prime's sword and wings. It's a nice extra, but it also costs you a few bucks extra. Had they left it out, I doubt you would miss it but the story is he got kidnapped in a raid, and if there are more new Wreckers coming presumably you can put him back with them.
We haven't got a new Barrage from G1 in years. There was the 1985 toy, and we got a Kreon and a Tiny Titan. But that was it - so even a retool is pretty exciting nowadays. It does a good job making a rhinoceros beetle out of Bombshell, adding new bug kibble you can fold up and put on the robot mode's chest. Also notable, the transformation flips the chest around so it looks like a new silhouette. Well, mostly - the little buggy arms are still there, but new ones are added to his forearms. The vestigial wheels are still on his shins, the rocker ankles, and all of that. He doesn't have a sword, but he retains the 3-in-1 blaster from Bombshell. I like the new head a lot, and the alternate bug chest is very charming.
Transformation is pretty easy, with lots of tabs and slots fitting in logical ways. It's not a pain in the neck, and you get little bug legs and a new head when you're done. It's a short review, but it's a set, and it's good, so I don't have a lot to whine about. If someone makes a sword I could use it, but I could also steal one from Ransack.
Finishing up the set is Chop Shop, a fellow we've had a few times in tiny sizes. One was a tiny Micromaster sidekick for Megatron, another was a retool of Shrapnel - just like this one. The figure has minimal changes, but they're sensible ones with a new set of mandibles, 2 new blasters, a new head, and extra add-on legs. It's a relatively simple fix, but with that and paint you get a figure that seems almost entirely new - and he keeps a redeco of Shrapnel's blaster, too. You can give that to someone else if you need, or store it on his back. It would be nice to have the trident, but two blasters are no slouch either. I'd say "maybe next time" but I'm decreasingly confident any non-TV show character will get multiple toys, and the Deluxe Decepticons are not exactly famous faces. Speaking of faces, the new head looks more than a good bit like the old one, so kudos Hasbro.
Transformation is pretty simple, and the bug mode looks a good bit like the original toy. It's not identical, but Hasbro did a nice job with those add-on leg parts and making the shoulders into his eyes. The articulated mandibles are excellent, and I love a good mechanized animal toy. It's great to pick up something and have my reaction to it be something like "hey, this isn't frustrating at all!"
Target had a great - if disjointed - 4-pack of random dudes for $80, and it's a great value. Amazon's sets seem like less of a deal - roughly $55 (or $60) for 2-3 guys more or less works out to suggested retail price of the toys from which these were repainted. I am still on the fence of the other two sets as I write this, but I have a soft spot for colorful creatures and these guys fit the bill. There were enough changes - and a fun tie to Solus Prime - to recommend this set. The characters aren't famous enough to warrant all-new toys, so you have to ask "Is this good enough?" and my feeling is that yes, yes they are. Let's hope Venom is on the way soon, it's great to see some of these teams getting updates and possibly even completed.
