Beam me up! A few companies have tried to make Star Trek construction work over the years, and now the baton has been passed to Hasbro with Star Trek Kre-o sets, due out next year. Based on the new movie (so far), it's pretty much what you'd expect: bricks, figures, and fun. Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy were shown with a modestly-sized USS Enterprise. Not much else was shown, but if I were to speculate I'd wager on another 6 sets with some form of collectible blind bag.
Why? Because Hasbro introduced blind bags to Transformers Kre-o sets. Numerous characters will be sold including Galvatron, Sunstorm, Waspinator, and more with a big emphasis on Decepticons. They'll be joined by Combiners Kreons, which are minifigures which can "transform" into an alt mode a swell as form a larger robot. Predaking, Superion, Devastator, and Bruticus were shown, continuing the Decepticon-heavy lineup. These look like a lot of fun, with singles estimated at $3 and 4-figure combiner teams at $11. They should start showing up in stores around the August retail resets.
Despite being cleared out from a few stores, the line will also continue with numerous new sets which emphasize conflict and multiple characters. This time around, Optimus Prime will be packaged with Megatron, and numerous "City" elements will be included to make more of a makeshift playset rather than just provide one core model with a couple of figures. It's an interesting gamble, and one I'm curious to watch as Hasbro develops its construction line with (hopefully) even more great licenses. A few upcoming Battleship sets were also shown, plus a "Battle Boat" promotional set was given out. Kudos on Hasbro for keeping the interest flowing, last year they handed out a single figure and this year, you get a whole polybag! (We will, of course, review it soon.)
