Hasbro Transformers Hunt for the Decepticons Breacher Action FigureThere are lots of ups and downs in the Transformers lines. Some toys are simple and fun, others are challenging and satisfying, and others? Well, they just suck. Breacher does not suck, but rather, he actually makes you understand the recent retail price increase for this size of toy. (Scout toys used to be $7 or $8.) His transformation is involved and may involve pieces popping off. There are lots of tabs to get into place just right. Oh, and did we mention he's designed to interact with this year's Sea Spray toy? Well, that's the claim anyway. (Come back in a week for pictures of that.)

Packed out in robot mode, it's obvious to see that this is a toy that's slightly better than this assortment usually gets. The face has more in common with pre-movie robots than his peers, as he actually has a mouth and there aren't strange fragile shards of robot hanging off his person too much. The leg proportions look more human than animal-like, and his hands (molded into fists) have a unique bar on which you can clamp other weapons. It's an interesting alternative to the standard fist hole and peg design, and on this figure it seems to work just fine.

With elements of a tiny Ultra Magnus or baby Prime, this bulky robot can quickly and carefully be massaged into an armored personnel carrier (APC) with tons of panels, swiveling bits, and folding elements that make this toy really feel complicated enough to warrant an extra dollar or two. His armor pretty much masks any hint of a robot mode inside, which is nice, but those elements are clearly present in robot mode. The blue, 4-inch long vehicle has the number 28 featured on it in multiple places and the significance is a mystery. Who out there has a birthday on the 28th? Maybe it's for you!

As a small but complicated toy, Breacher is an atypical release for Hasbro. He is also said to have been designed to compliment Sea Spray by fitting in his bed in hovercraft mode, although it doesn't seem he really fits any better or worse than most other Scout-class toys. Still, there's no denying they make a nice team. I'd say get Breacher if you're itching for a decent new character whose design could easily pass on a "classics" shelf as well as a "movie" one. If you like fun and complicated small toys, this one is right up your alley. (If you want something simple and awesome, go get Hubcap.)
