I spied the Regen Capsule Carrying Case with Lime Material Boy from Toy Pizza on eBay before it was announced that it existed or would go for sale and had one of those weird, visceral reactions for no good reason. I had to have it. It looks sort of like a cross between the Micronauts Pharoid and the Kenner C-3PO carry case. We've had hundreds - perhaps even thousands - of Glyos-compatible PVC figures as well as soft vinyl figures and vehicle-like figures, but those weird, useless accessories are far and few between. All of these things are basically boxes in which to cram figures, with the Micronauts one being fairly useless with storage for one figure. You could cram two, maybe three figures if dismembered into this Regen Capsule. Kenner's cases could hold an army - but are probably a wee bit expensive to make today while not being particularly useful.
The Time Chamber of old was only chrome on the plate on the front - this Regen Chamber is chrome all over. If you owned the old C-3PO case, you'll recognize the clear plastic being coated in vac-metal-ish metallic finish, giving a mirror finish to the whole dang thing and also picking up all of your greasy fingerprints. It has a hinge joint rather than a stressed plastic piece at the bottom, and there's a latch on top to keep it locked shut. It stands freely and has 3 Glyos sockets between the front and the back - you can connect fists or heads or other parts to them.
It was no surprise that you could keep a figure, or two, or three inside. (Well, two or three, that was a surprise.) I was also pleased that the sculpt was amazing, and that the dang thing's Glyos ports worked well. I assumed they'd be too tight, and I was wrong - it's a smooth fit and you can easily pop parts in there if you're so inclined. I was surprised how much fun I was having popping various arms in there.
This is not a new mold, but it's a new enough presentation that I got super excited to buy three at once in a set. Each figure has two heads - one helmeted, one not - with the helmets being molded in color to match the bodies and painted in silver. The human heads may be molded in color - I can't tell when I hold them up to the light.
The included figure is an unpainted green "Material Boy," or a Knights of the Slice figure. It matches the Mikros Regen Capsule [FOTD #2,088], which is one of my favorites this year and I hope they have the desire to rerun it so you can get one, too. The clear figures are perfectly nice but lack the zing of the painted ones. He has the helmet head, but not the unmasked head from the Mikros collection. It's a good figure if you don't have one.
We don't see a lot of big accessories in Glyos-compatible lines, certainly not things that are big, shiny, and largely useless. Nobody can store a collection in this, and it won't fit in your pocket to protect the figures you carry around with you. It's just an awesome obelisk that serves as a tribute to yet another classic toy, and hopefully we see it rereleased in different colors over time. Or glow. And hopefully at a lower price, because $30 for a blank figure and a box was a smidgen more than I would like to pay - but if this release is the only one, well, no complaints. It's a wonderful design with a few fun features I assume we'll see reused for years to come, and I hope we see some sort of "Pheynoid" capsule or perhaps a Mushi Chamber down the road to join it.
