After the second Transformers movie came out, a bunch of items from Transformers Animated suddenly entered toy limbo. Generally when one of the top toy brands becomes the biggest thing ever, you don't leave things unreleased-- but Hasbro wanted to focus on the movie, so Arcee and several other great designs were delayed, relegated to exclusives, or in some cases, not released anywhere in the USA. This was, of course, a huge mistake as the first-ever car Arcee toy had huge fan support and the figure effectively stayed sold out for months while Toys "R" Us restocked. If you wanted her, you probably couldn't get her-- but you could get her case mate, Cybertronian Ratchet.
This 5 1/2-inch tall robot takes Derrick Wyatt's unique style and makes it in to something fans have, on some level or another, been begging for over the past two decades. The figure has exceptional articulation and manages to be thin without being spindly, and manages to pull off being female without being girly. It wouldn't have killed them to add a little more deco on the face, specifically the character's red lips, but what are you going to do? She has knee joints, jointed toes, and multiple unrestricted points of articulation in her arms. Hasbro opted to make her play a little better than most similar figures in her size class, and that's a huge plus. I mean, unless you're like me and have no skills, you can always paint her up a bit.
She has two holsters for her swords, which are sort of a mixed bag-- they do store the weapons, but holding them is a problem. While in robot mode, gravity keeps them in their proper place. In car mode, they might fall out when you roll her across the table. In that respect, she's more of a collector figure than a toy figure even though she holds together well and is, well, fun to play with. The transformation is a little more complex than you might expect from the photos, but you'll have no problems figuring her out with the included instructions.
Generally speaking Transformers don't have boobs-- especially not the female ones-- so Arcee is something unusual. Since it takes a classic (and underrepresented) character, it should be something any Transformers fan or Hajime Sorayama would approve of, we would say. She holds her swords well, the wings are easily brushed aside if you don't like them, and her head has an excellent range of movement. Until Hasbro releases the best-ever "Classics" or "Generations" Arcee, this should be a great substitute and an excellent addition to your toy stash in its own right.
