Another year, another premium-priced exclusive! No doubt due to Toy Tokyo needing to make a few bucks on the item, 2014's Power Lords exclusive Ggripptogg (Grey and Black) costs nearly twice as much as a normal Ggripptogg - even the ones with added deco were only $15 each. It's a shame - not as bad as the Outer Space Men of 2012, but what are you gonna do? I bought it, and curse me kilts, it's good. This figure - and indeed everything Glyos always ever - can benefit greatly from a color change, and it turns out that the Ggripptogg body looks better with a) added paint and b) less pink. Who knew?

As of yet there's no matching "reverse" figure - a black torso with grey limbs - but it wouldn't surprise me to see one pop up in Onell Design's shop or somewhere down the road. It's really sharp - the black plastic is just glossy enough to make the skin texture shine in new and meaningful ways. It's not that pink or purple didn't look good - it was a nice first attempt - but this one is really, really nice. The wrinkly face and gnarly arms work extremely ell in this shade, and while the red spikes look a little silly in the arms it still ain't bad. Unlike the previous release, the Horsemen added multiple colors of paint so in addition to various lights and buttons being decorated, he also has a painted sash and control box of some sort on his chest. They even painted his pants, which is a first for this line. It's the same deco on the green and black repaints, but it's still cool.

The biggest and likely most expensive changes include two new pieces. One, he has a short-handled electri-mace rather than a long one. The figure was advertised as having a long one, so this shorter piece came as something of a surpris - and it looks good too, so kudos on that. It also has a dollop of blue paint on the cap, making it the first time the Horsemen have painted this element. The head itself is also new, this is the first-ever release of the "normal" Ggripptogg head. It has painted grey "ears" and eerie red eyes, making for one of the most striking Glyos-compatible figures to date.

The figure has the same great sculpting as before, but the main reason to jump at this 5 1/8-inch figure is the deco. It really brings out the scaley armor, the lined skin - seriously, you'll never see better skin on a 3 3/4-inch alien figure, and I've looked - plus other notable elements. Two of the four hands are designed to grip the weapon, and on my sample they have no difficulty doing just that.

Aside from being compatible with the Glyos system, this figure should be commended for having about 15 points of articulation. The only knock I can give it is that both forearms move together at a single joint at the elbow and can't move by themselves, but otherwise there's nothing here anyone probably could've done better. Everything blends in nicely, and all the joints are nice and tight. Due to the higher pricing I expect it to take longer to sell out and maybe even decrease in price on eBay in the short term, but it's plenty cool - if you're ordering figures from Store Horsemen anyway, go ahead and snag a Ggripptogg. Maybe not this one, but one of them. Me, I like this one.
