There are more Kenner Star Wars cantina alien tributes to do, and now Onell Design gives us Hammerden. Referencing Kenner's Hammerhead figure almost exactly how I imagined it - with option parts I did not - Onell Design shows just how much they get it by ensuring their tribute replicated the side eyes of the original 1979 action figure.
The standard 2 1/4-inch Pheyden comes assembled in its normal form - the blue jerkin matches Hammerhead's original blue threads, with a spectacular color match as you expect from Onell Design. I love the shifty eyes, and the design around the neck recalls the fabric gathering around the neck of that original Kenner figure - but you knew that. When I occasionally imagined what Kenner Alien Glyos would look like, this was it. What I was not prepared for were the extras.
A matching sack of extra parts are welcome, but to the imagination-challenged like myself it's like getting a bag of LEGO bricks. While Onell Design chief Matt Doughty did tell me he has a build he has created, he didn't share it - but he did say he enjoyed and liked seeing what people were posting elsewhere. I looked to Instagram to see some nifty necks and outrageous heads made from the Axis Joints and scarves, plus enhanced limbs. I'm likely just to leave it as the stock build until we see something official, mostly because that's how I tend to usually roll.
Kenner's old mistakes are some of the most memorable figures of all time - Walrus Man, Greedo, Hammerhead, and the rest stand out as diverting from the on-screen designs to make really cool toys that have a lot more charm than the perfect Hasbro, Sideshow, and Hot Toys figures that might follow. To many, Hammerhead was a skinny blue alien in a baby onesie for their entire lives as fans. Toys change perceptions of the world, and it's really neat to see a tribute to that happy accident as such a striking - and in-character - colorway. I can't wait for what I assume is Walrus Man next!
