Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Chrome Accessories SetOne of the very last releases for The Outer Space Men before its end - which, it turned out, would just be a 2 1/2-year hiatus - was a sack of Chrome Accessories created to go with some customized figures for a Galactic Holiday Phase just a few months prior. These were extras - so if you wanted some silver weapons to outfit your figures for any custom reasons, here you are. The weapons for Ohpromatem and Horroscope match those of Metamorpho and Xodiac's 2010 Galactic Holiday figures, respectively - if you got the silver ones. Gold ones were sold as well.

If memory serves, this came out at the same time as a clearance sale and within a day or two of the painted Power Lords launch - so it was a big order, with a few items being posted a day or so apart. I guess a lot of us were playing "chicken" on shipping, thankfully nothing I wanted sold out prior to the order going live. Well, maybe - these chrome weapons shipped in a plastic Ziplock bag (pictured below) and more or less stayed there for 28 months. (There were some severe order processing issues.)

A word of warning: some of these accessories are worthless without their corresponding figures. Chrome pins and, uh, belly ornaments only fit certain body types. Helmets are designed for particular torsos. Colossus Rex has a shield that requires a clip so he can use it - and it's only included with a figure since it is made from the more flexible plastic, and not the ABS tool used to crank out these sets. It's a nice shield, but since the clip connects via a Glyos pin odds are you're not going to use it as an actual accessory without that missing piece.

Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Chrome Accessories Set

The accessories for Terra Firma and Jack Asteroid are both identical - so they can swap freely between other versions of the figures, and the helmets were designed to also fit on Ohpromatem and Metamorpho figures. You get 2 flag poles, 2 belly ornaments, 2 backpack caps, 2 ray guns, and 2 3-piece helmets. While the caps may only attach to the "Levity" Magnet Backpacks, you can find a use for everything else elsewhere. Virtually all figures can use the chrome pole or ray gun, and the helmets can be used on a few others as well. For customs, these aren't bad - the mirrored finish is nice and shiny, but prying off those belly Earth symbols so you can use the chrome plugs in their stead is murder on your thumbs.

Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Chrome Accessories SetI'm more fond of the Gamma-X gear, mostly because it serves a real purpose. The set features a ray gun, a second ray gun for the top of his armor, and a two-piece clamshell suit that covers him up quite nicely. You can even see little lenses on the front piece so he can "see" through it.

The original intent of the original Gamme-X prototype was to have a mirrored piece of back armor, to give the figure a little more oomph to his glow. The 2014 painted figure had a silver painted armored piece - it sort of captured the look, but not spirit, of the original prototype. If you mix-and-match parts, you can achieve this retro look - but since the glow on the figure is terrible, it's not going to quite give you the intended effect, either. Hey, we can try, right?

The chrome finish looks good - there's not a lot of detail on these or any chrome pieces, so it's nice and flat and mirrored and shiny. It looks a little strange on the fully painted figures, but adds some flash to the clear colorless one.

Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Chrome Accessories SetThe silver gear for Colossus Rex is nice, because a giant silver axe is always cool. The metal finish looks more dangerous than clear purple or clear blue, and the mace ain't bad either. From the look of things, the glow version should be identical.

The stuff fits in place quite nicely, with the notable exception of the shield - without a borrowed clip form another version, it's not going to connect to his wrist. As such, you might want to ensure you keep that clip handy when you swap accessories. It's kind of a challenge to pry off, but it's not nearly as bad as the belly gems for the other figures in this set. I like 'em, but I can't help but think that Rex' gear would look even better splattered with some sort of blue or green alien blood to add some more to the gladiator theme of his armaments.

Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Chrome Accessories Set

Rounding out the set is gear for Ohpromatem and Horroscope - which just recycles existing parts and pieces, mostly. Ohpromatem brings back the silver head pin and belly circle from Metamorpho, and Horroscope revisits the helmet, staff, and blaster from Xodiac - but with a new Saturn-themed belly ornament. Since I wanted to have a set of silver Xodiac gear (I got the gold Christmas one a few years back) this was a great way to scratch that itch on the cheap. It adds a little bling to the painted figures, but probably will do the most for your Alpha Phase figures from Comic-Con 2013.

...and that's pretty much it! The gear fits, it's just a tight fit in spots thanks to the chrome on the Glyos pegs making it a very snug squeeze. I assume few to none of these sets will turn up for sale, so don't worry too much if you can't find them - it's a nice set, and I'm sort of hoping we get a few more clear color figures to make use of these parts. Also, the weapons fit well on Glyos and LEGO figure fists - you never can have too many toy guns right?
