Playmobil toys have been on my radar for quite some time and are a Toy Fair tradition - they have an unsupervised basket of them in front of their booth, and you can just ask to have one. I snagged a 2016 Toy Fair Girl Figure and it has a new (to me) snap-on dress that works quite nicely. I assume this figure came in another set, but I can't figure out which one just yet.

These promotional sets come bagged in little cardboard envelope boxes since the dawn of man, with minor changes here and there. The figure is notable in that it has, for lack of a better phrase, enhanced facial deco. The Playmobil figure was largely designed with childrens' drawings in mind, dots for eyes and a mouth with no nose and no ears as little kids typically do not illustrate them. This figure advances it a bit with larger eyes, complete with eyebrows. The head is different from the usual injection molded noggin, in that there are no brown molded eyes in here - it's a pink head with the face drawn on. This is more or less good for this design, although I do miss the classic styling.

What I do appreciate are the dresses. The figure comes to you in an undergarment with shoes - and you can elect to put on a red formal gown with a silver necklace, or snap on a pink mini dress. They snap on nicely and the design is - like most Playmobil items - totally functional. It's a notable way of adding "doll play" without the rooted hair or 12-inch body. I've seen other manufacturers do clip dresses and other small garments, but this is pretty efficient and I daresay quite impressive in its fit. Were Playmobil ever tasked with licensed characters, I assume they'd knock us all out with their super hero "quick change" figures.

This figure isn't going to change your life, but it does show what a company can do within the confines of a well-worn template. We've been seeing largely unchanged figures for over 4 decades, with the originals being more or less compatible with the new ones. Other than LEGO, few companies even try to keep one generation of toys fully playable with the next. I assume we may eventually see some attempts at rooted hair or additional facial details, but maybe not - Playmobil doesn't seem to follow too many of the big trends for long, and they're generally doing well as a result. I'm not super keen on the dresses hindering leg movement, but hey - they do pop off. It's something.
