Hasbro Transformers Generations Titans Return Autobot Ptero Action FigureI'm wondering how much more juice we'll see from Titans Return toys because we're getting close to movie time. It may not be premature to declare Autobot Ptero as the best in the line - it's marvelous. The little robot is nice. The transforming prehistoric flying creature robot is good. His gun mode? Good. The space vehicle mode? Good enough.

This 1.5-inch robot is not immediately obvious to me - it's Swoop-ish enough for my liking, though, so let's just say it is Swoop and be done with it. He's got a visor and no paint with a chest that looks kind of like a jet. The coloring is vaguely like the original Swoop toy too, so this is a nifty little micro version of a dinobot. Or it isn't. That's up to you. It has the same articulation as all the rest, so you're probably going to love it if you're the slightest bit interested in this kind of toy.

The Autobot Ptero head mode looks like comic Swoop. Er... cartoon Swoop. It's a Swoop soup. It's a nice sculpt and looks great on flyers - Brainstorm, in particular. Really superb.

Packaged in flyer mode, this Pterosaur robot is just tops. It's big and wide, quite possibly the widest Titan Masters vehicle to date. As usual there's not a ton of paint, but you get blue eyes and a red crest on the head. The wings are barely articulated, and there's not much else you can do with it. It's cute, it's fun, it works.

Transformation to vehicle is pretty easy. The head flips over to reveal what may as well be a cannon, a seat flips out, and the wings flip up. And you're done.

It looks like a spacecraft from 40 years ago - it's fanciful and fun, and I like it. It's obviously a dinosaur contorted to a vehicular mode, but that's OK. I loved Dinosaucers, the world needs more of this kind of thing. It's very simple, but the chair is high backed and wonderfully detailed, giving you a better and more convincing vehicle than many of the other toys in this line. It feels like you got a conversion without too much work. (Sawback? He's too much work.)

The weapon mode is just the pterosaur mode on its side with a handle extended and the head swapped out for the blaster barrel. It is not impressive - but it's something. It's a mode, and for a mold this small to be a triple changer that isn't utter garbage is worth of much praise. I doubt kids would find it convincing, but I survived the 1980s so added functionality is enough to make me glad I bought it.

I assume this line is going to go away, because at $5 it's almost too good. I know, 20 years ago we got bigger and more impressive toys for that price, but that was then. Few to no major toy companies release anything better than a PVC or blind-bagged micro figure for $5 these days, so a toy with this much ability to futz with it - that's also creative and has decent modes - is a rare treat. If you don't own any Titan Masters toys, and most people don't seem to be buying them, get this one. It'll spoil you for the rest. Skip lunch and get this one if you see it on a store shelf, and consider buying the wave online to get it too.
