Hasbro Transformers Generations Titans Return Overboard Action FigureThe toy which inspired Overboard was a Soundwave cassette named "Overkill," an adorable little beast that could become a microcassette and worm his way into your heart. D'awww. In Universe, he retained his name for a 2008 special edition which gave him Grimlock's body - and head to boot. Overkill once again borrows some parts from a recent Grimlock-inspired Clobber [FOTD #1,506] toy, but keeps the Crashbash [FOTD #1,508] face from earlier this year.

This 1.5-inch robot is Crashbash in new colors. The sculpt is the same, with the "big face" now having a blue helmet and a silver interior. The tiny robot head has no paint at all, which makes sense given you're going to cram it in a neck socket and probably eventually scrape it off. Functionally he's the same as his two older brothers, so he's a fun little robot.

The Overboard head mode looks like Crashbash in a new colorway - sorta like Drillbison, kinda like the inverse of Universe Overkill. For consistency's sake I wish they just used the Clobber head mold and made it like Overkill, but this is what it is. It's still neat - the light grey paint mask is a little sloppy on my sample, but it's charming.

The dragon mode is pretty much what you've seen before, in new colors - the dark blue face contrasts from his grey dino head, helping to give the toy a little more distinction between modes. He's a dragon platform for a robot to ride, just like you see in the wild or at the zoo. It's nice.

The dinosaur mold is a gem. It lacks the ceratosaur-ish nose horn, but the coloring matches the G1 Overkill pretty well - the dark blue lower jaw and tail and arms are all here, but it lacks silver guns and the lower back color has been changed. It's still neat, though, and quite cute - he's chubby, with gold eyes and a Decepticon symbol stamped in his forehead. The legs are also grey now rather than blue. As a modernization/remix goes, it works pretty well overall. The upper head of the dinosaur is positively slathered in thick grey paint, and it looks superb.

Lastly, there's a blaster mode - the big bulk part can be a hand-held weapon for larger toys. It's gun-like and it fits in a fist nicely. I can't say it's an amazing weapon, but it's functional and believable in ways that are necessary when you have a toy like this which, for $5, gets you five distinct modes.

It's easy to say "that dragon's not perfect" or "I don't much care for the blaster," but I'd be a jerk if I didn't just say that as bang for the buck goes nothing is better than a Titan Master. It's $5. You can't even get lunch for $5 at most fast food places these days unless you get a kid's meal, so a Transformers toy with several modes at a dollar a pop is a bargain. Its only real failing is being the third squirting out of a mold in as many waves. I've got plenty of this kind of toy, but even the third time is still fun to futz with. I hope you get one if you see it, any one of the three would be a good one to buy.
