Onell Design Glyos Quallerran Lingrem Action FigureAs one of many, many homage figures in 2016 we got the Gremlins-inspired Quallerran Lingrem along with a companion figure that looked vaguely like Mogwai. (The creature, not the band.) This one doesn't appear to ape any specific color of a specific or obvious (to me) product, but it doesn't seem all that far off from the creature Stripe from the first movie. Maybe it's based on the NES game, or a certain product, but a far as I can tell it's just the Gremliniest Noboto money can buy. The character has orange stripes on his shoulders and matching kneecaps, plus a swell belt. Green plastic is largely left unpainted except for some tan bits on the chest, fingers, calf muscle areas, and of course the face.

While the Noboto build and Quallerran head don't say "Gremlin" at all, the whole package does work in a sort of perverse way. The design is far off enough that the colors may bring to mind a knock-off of the genuine article, which is sort of perfect. That's kind of what a designer figure in this arena should be - if it can make you think of a thing without aping the thing, you've done something right. Along with numerous other figures from last year, it's an amazing little meta-collection. If you're into Onell Design stuff for the original concepts and marvelous colorways, it could make this a boring figure. If you're all-in to the Glyos thing, it's kind of awesome - you get little tastes of classic movies and video games in the context of this strange little right their crew has set out for you.

With that in mind, the figure is basically a classic Noboto with awesome new colors and the new-for-2016 horned head. It's sort of a smiley face, with hints of a mouth, ears, eyes, and the works. Through the magic of paint you get your eyebrows and eyes, plus the pointed Gremlin ears. The figure is fully articulated with wonderful shoulders that allow for the arms to swing out in addition to going forward and backward. The figure has no problems standing or sitting, and as always can be customized with the parts of other Onell Design figures. If they had vehicles for Onell Design - proper ones, I consider The Rig to be a figure - I have little doubt this one would fit inside it just fine.

The alternate Noboto head is dark green with red eyes, and is easily one of the more evil noggins packed in for some time. It's ghoulish and malevolent on a mold that was previously adorable. The figure also has a nifty and optional collar piece, which I assume is going to be the first or second part you lose when playing with these. The backpack might be the second - it's green with painted tan dots, but I think the figure looks better without it. If you attach the accessory, at least you can be pretty sure you won't lose it since the Glyos system is pretty sturdy.

This is a good figure. It's not the most perfect plastic person you'll ever see, but the paint is applied evenly and cleanly, completely within the lines. Given these figures' edition sizes, that's amazing - Hasbro makes tens or hundreds of thousands of some of these things and they're not always as clean as the low-hundreds releases from Onell Design. Granted, you don't have to worry about things like packaging or approvals, either - they do what they want their way, and with no licenses or shareholders they gain the freedom to give you the adorable quasi-robot faux-Gremlin of your dreams. Obviously if you have a closet of Nobotos you don't necessarily need the Quallerran Lingrem - but if you see it cheap, it's a nice one.
