Onell Design Glyos Astro-Nautilus Redborg Syndicate Action FigureI'm a big fan of the Outer Space Men figures, especially the occasional crossovers done with Onell Design. Astro-Nautilus Redborg Syndicate was stamped out in clear yellow plastic with a hefty slathering of paint and a nice armory, too. It also costs over twice what the original release did in 2010.

As a bonus, this figure comes with the complete 2010 weapons sprue - that means you get black ABS Metamorpho and Xodiac accessories. As Inferno had no ABS parts, you don't get anything from that.

This is a neat one - and curiously built. I guess I don't know how the molds work, because the figure's chest, arms, and head are cast in clear yellow plastic with the lower torso, crotch, and legs cast in maroon plastic. The color matches so perfectly, the only hint that they weren't all the same material was the glossy finish on the upper chest. Most of these figures are cast in a single color of plastic, so I'm more than a little surprised to see a mix here. The clear yellow looks like cubes of frozen liquid sunshine, wearing a suit with colors that actually look pretty close to this very site. I can dig it. The yellow reacts to black light in the same way that his accessories don't.

Articulation of this 3 3/4-inch action figure is just like the other ones - each arm has 2 joints, the waist has 2 joints, and each leg is jointed in 3 places. The figure is about 18 parts, plus a staff.

I love the deco - the eyes are black with clear yellow in the middle, and the arms have painted suckers on them. That's fantastic. This extra texture really makes this figure pop, with the bright clear coloring really making it feel out-of-this-world in a way that would seem at home in the advent of mainstream color TV in the 1960s just like it might have fit in with the bonkers neon 1990s. The texture of the original figure is retained, and the banded shell-like features of Astro-Nautilus' skin translate to clear plastic quite nicely.

When The Outer Space Men were announced as Glyos figures, one of my early assumptions was that we'd probably see regular solid color recolors forever. We got a few, and they stopped - we never got any opaque solid color figures unless you count glow, and Onell's lovely recolors have been released as a slow trickle. I'm still looking forward to seeing what else Doughty does for recolors, and even though he's been slowly releasing these over seven years so far they've all been pretty great. This figure sold out in a few days, which was a welcome change from insta-gone. $22 is expensive, but with two kinds of plastic and a decent slathering of paint it's a good enough toy figure. Get it if you can, or care to, because it is pretty.
