Transformers Authentics Dinobot Grimlock Action FigureAssembly is rarely required with Transformers, but the Authentics line changes that. Grimlock gives you a 6-inch robot that requires you plug in a head to a piece of back kibble, and the packaging does not explicitly say how to do that. Parts pop off fairly easily, but it's a big, cheap toy. And it's pretty good - it's not quite G1 and it's not quite modernized.

While the Cyber Battalion toys had no knees, this one has them and elbows too! Grimlock's legs flip over to become the back and tail of the dinosaur, with the forearms swiveling around to be the dinosaur legs. The back kibble becomes the dinosaur top, and it's pretty good. Our robot pal has 9 points of articulation with 5mm fists, so you can add your own weapons as none are included.

Robot deco is very G1, with a lot of paint. A gold chest and red lower-torso set the body off from the mostly grey limbs, which include some blue bits on the shins. It's pretty nice - it can't combine or anything, but it's a decent enough toy to futz with. It's super simple and you can get some good poses out of it.

The Grimlock dinosaur is OK - he has little articulated arms and legs. The jaw and neck don't move, nor does the tail. It's pretty stiff, but it's an amusing update of the original, scientifically dubious t-rex design.

It's largely unpainted - red eyes, gold toes, and a whole lot of grey plastic. You might want to customize it with paint or stickers if the opportunity arises, or just leave it as a robot. There is significantly more texture on the dinosaur head than many other Grimlock toys, so it certainly has its own distinctive personality when compared to other takes on the Dinobot commander.

Given you get a 6-inch tall robot for $10, this is a pretty good deal - parts come off easily, and it's largely unpainted, but it's a bargain compared to $30 Voyager-class toys sold at regular stores. It doesn't do much, but collectors will dig the old-school update while kids might appreciate it being a dinosaur robot. I most certainly do not need to own this toy, but the packaging is nice and it's fun to fidget with on my desk. I have yet to open the other two big guys, but I'm assuming there's no way they can be as satisfying as this one given their weird arms. I'm tentatively advising you to snag this one first.
