It's sort of funny to see that the driving force of bringing attention to 1980s girl toy brands to adult collectors is dudes selling to dudes. (See: She-Ra, some of My Little Pony.) Callgrim Fragarian is a fancy redeco of Callgrim colored and scented to resemble the original Kenner Strawberry Shortcake dolls. Really! The figure carries a hefty price tag because of the added deco, plastic colors, and scent, but... c'mon. And you get a trading card! The only way this figure could be any cooler was if the pale red/pink segments were that glow-in-the-dark "Solaris" plastic.
Made of about 27 parts, this 3 1/2-inch figure really does smell vaguely of plastic strawberries. I don't know how long the scent will last, but it really hits you when you crack open the bag. As the first (and so far, only) scented Glyos figure it's certainly worthy of some buzz, although it wasn't a quick sell-out. Only a few hundred were made, and Callgrim figures can get pretty pricey once they sell through... so if you're waiting, don't wait too much longer. I've got a list of regretted non-purchases from these guys and I have yet to be sorry I've ordered any of these.
While Callgrim figures are normally cast from three colors of plastic, this one has brown, red, green, and pink plus a heck of a lot of paint. White, green, orange, and red accent this dollie-themed figure quite nicely, with an added dark red ring around the figure's neck to help it pop a bit. Normally the figures are cast in more, shall we say, bad-ass colors so this is a real diversion and it's funny to see toy fans flock to such a bizarre mash-up. Of course, we've got Bronies now, which isn't funny but the fact there are conservative Brony Tumblr fan pages is hilarious.
If you don't have any Callgrim toys, get this one. It's a good place to start. If you already have a few, the purchase of this one should probably hinge on your love for the novelty of such an unusual toy. This is the sort of thing that can only exist in a direct-to-consumer Internet-driven toy line. Well, or convention exclusives maybe. Hasbro did give us R2-KT, I suppose, and I guess Derpy probably sold mostly to collectors at SDCC 2012. But hey! It's a Fragarian! This is a heck of a novel idea and one I suspect we won't see repeated too much, but if we ever see Hasbro finally give us a fleet of Transformers jets in the colors of My Little Pony characters, you can snort and point to this colorful Callgrim you've had for a few years.
