I'm not sure which sick bastard wants to keep adding smells to Masters of the Universe Classics, but we got another stinker to join Stinkor and Moss Man with our pal Perfuma. I'm guessing she's supposed to smell like flowers, but when you check your mail trying to find the perfume sample to throw out and realize it was a $30 action figure, well, that's not great.
After I wrote this review (but before publication) I had to re-inject a statement here to just reiterate it - I put this figure in a room which was basically a closet in the back of a closet in the other end of my house. It still smells. I had to put it in a cardboard box to block the odor. It is vile. It is awful. If you are waffling on opening this figure, I advise against it.
The figure is neat, but like so many Princess of Power characters I don't come to the table feeling any warm fuzzies for her. It's more pink for the toy shelves, another blonde warrior with a flower theme. It's actually pretty creative and kind of funny when you take symbolism into account, so kudos to the Four Horsemen and Mattel for putting out something like this. The figure itself follows the usual pattern of taking the same basic female buck and slapping on a new head, new accessories, and a new dress - it works! It's also nothing you haven't seen before, which is one of the unfortunate realities of many ongoing toy lines. Without a major change-up every few years, lines like Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Masters of the Universe lack play features or new elements beyond the newness of the character. As a collector, a fresh character can do a lot to make a toy enticing, but if your goal goes beyond buying, shelving, and/or opening a figure there's not much new to say as the figure goes. Great color. Exceptional flower deco. Lovely greens and magenta. She'll look great standing on your shelf until you decide something else needs to occupy that space.
Articulation is really nothing special - if you've bought Adora or Spinnerella or Frosta or the like, you know the score here. The figure has a decent amount of joints with nearly every part articulated that you might expect - 18 joints and a Four Horsemen sculpt shouldn't be things we can shrug about. After hundreds of figures, it's easy to get jaded - thankfully, she has some cool accessories that may distract you from the charming face with the hair that doesn't feel like it's sitting on her head quite right.
She comes with a green shield (nothing new), a flower hat (new!), and a giant flower gun with removable bud (whoa). The shield clips on the arm without too much fuss, and features a green jewel and metallic green trimming. You've seen this kind of thing before. The gun, though, is weird - it's really heavy, arguably too heavy for the figure to use unless you're propping her up with a doll stand or other implements. The bud is removable, and I get the feeling a spring-loaded launcher would have made this the best, goofiest weapon in the whole line. As it is, it's just nicely sculpted and looks convincingly flower-esque. Rounding out the gear is an optional flower hat that sits on her head. She looks goofy with it, but, well, it was the 1980s. I find the whole thing to be a little odd.
While some of the figures I could beam about just because they're awesome, some are things purely for collectors or fans of the line. If you're a She-Ra fan, this is a figure that may be for you. If you aren't, well, you can skip it. The smell is getting to me, and the hair is a little weird. I wouldn't say it's a failure or terrible, it's just that $30 can buy you some pretty fabulous stuff. This is a great figure to complete your set... but it's not a lot of fun and she can't hold her weapon too well, so I don't really have much exciting to say about it. It's nice. It meets expectations. You won't hate it.
