Due to many redecorations and remolds, a lot of Transformers toys are largely inevitable - Hasbro makes a new character, they may wish to recoup the mold investment as much as possible. Smokescreen exists because Streetwise made a good Prowl, and Prowl was the basis for Bluestreak and Smokescreen back in the 1980s. In other words, it's pretty much inevitable, except when it isn't.
This one is less of a good fit than usual, as the original Smokescreen (and Bluestreak) lacked the police lightbar that this one has - but aside from that, it's a solid fit.
The transformation is the same as several other toys - and more toys will have a similar transformation this year - so rest assured that the robot's most interesting points are in the paint. The head sculpt is still great, with a blue helmet, silver face, and yellow crest. The Prowl chest is painted to look more like Smokescreen's hood, and there's a whole mess more blue than you might expect for the red and blue Autobot. The elbows are a little blocky, but that's no fault of the deco artist - and it still is fun to play with and pose, consistent with the rest of Combiner Wars. Of course, his mere existing gives rise to the demand of more of these guys.
The hand/foot/gun is the same as his mold mates, as is the triple-barrel shotgun - now molded in blue and painted silver. They are a tight fit, but the hands can hold them and so can the ports on the car mode.
Das Auto is a little wonky, since it is merely Prowl/Streetwise with new deco - the light bar is there, and it's clearly a cop car that has been converted. It's still nifty - the deco looks better than theh 2009 Universe car, which was a Classics-themed Prowl/Silverstreak redeco. It's nice enough, and I do like it - but the combiner.shtmlect means it became a leg in my Sky Reign shortly after its arrival. It's a pretty solid leg or arm, too.
I'm a sucker for combiners, so I'd say get it - especially if a Bluestreak happens, you're going to wish you had this one. We have no idea if it is, though, and there will not be a Unite Warriors version of it because he was replaced by Ratchet in their Sky Reign, which they call Lynxmaster. This one will probably be worth getting in the long run for that reason alone.
