Hasbro Transformers Generations Titans Return Apeface Action FigureI like the Titans Return line bunches - don't get me wrong, I wish Apeface weren't the size of a donut hole, but it's a nifty toy in its own right. The original toy also went from ape to jet, and this one has a makeshift weapon mode as well - plus it has a tiny robot that can ride on his back or transform in to a head for your larger toys. It doesn't necessarily match any of the larger toys (maybe Astrotrain, which I don't have yet) but you can do it. It's neat. It's cute. It works.

Official Apeface Bio (Not On Pack)
The menacing shadow of Apeface is enough to make other bots scatter. The Decepticon believes intimidation is the best weapon. He's loud, obnoxious, and strikes fear into the sparks of other bots through his bloodcurdling growls. When Apeface teams up with other bots, he gives them the ability to mass shift and grow in size.

This 1.5-inch robot is, in robot mode, based on the original full-size Apeface toy and not his headmasters buddies. There's a visible panel over what would be his tech specs, the arms and legs show detailing that match up with the toy quite nicely, and is tiny unpainted black head is similar in form to the full-size head mode of this toy. He has 5 points of articulation, but doesn't necessarily need them to ride the gorilla mode - they are useful in changing to a head, though. It may be hard to see, but there are lots of tiny little details in this figure's design. Not a lot of paint, but it's still an impressive micro homage to a toy which, realistically, is sort of a miracle that it exists.

The Apeface head mode looks like that original Spasma head - and also Optimus Prime. This time around the eyes are black rather than silver, but it does a good job basically replicating the original toy noggin. Minus the silver. I don't doubt it will be the basis for some sort of Toxitron custom down the road.

The vehicle mode is a jet. It's a cute little jet. It's chubby and decorated with a red nose cone, some grey, and a Decepticon symbol on one of the wings. The figure plugs in the back, filling a hole rather than look like he's piloting it. (Through contortion, you can have him sit in the hole though.) It's a good tribute to the original toy, give or take the colors and size and complexity.

Transformation to ape is a snap - fold back the nose cone, and move the legs forward. If you like, you may plug the tiny Apeface robot on foot pegs to ride on his back. That's all there is to it.

The gorilla is pretty cool, but it's basically a brick with mobile arms. The red visor is nice, and there are big teeth that, I assume,.shtmliring toy fixers will paint up. Various elements on the toy resemble the larger original, like the chest compartment and the wings on his arms. There are tiny ape fists, wing kibblely bits, and the usual compliment of panels and notches. Since it doesn't do much, I'd say that on its own merits it's a hot ticket. I mean, mechanical ape. You can't go wrong.

Weapon mode is the jet mode, but the arms going forward instead of backward. It's easy to hold and perfectly nice. I doubt it will set the toy world ablaze, but it's a nice little bonus - and as I was a big fan of Targetmasters, this is a nice extra.

There were tiny, tiny Zoids kits with the little pilots, but roughly the same size as these Titans Masters vehicles. I love the idea of small toys and I hope they have a decent run of this line - especially if they include more creatures. Due to the fact that these are new toys with new features acting as a tribute to the classics, fans will no doubt remain eager for a full-size Apeface later. There is, of course, no guarantee this will happen and despite fans repeating to me that Hasbro said it will, I can't find anywhere from which this rumor originated. So for now, spend five dollars, and get this tiny robot. It's not like you've got too many micro toys.
