The "Club 2K" portion of Masters of the Universe Classics delivered a ton of fantastic figures that were, by virtue of not being on a show ran 5 days a week for many many years, somewhat less famous than their Filmation-based counterparts. Evil Seed had two distinctive looks - one for each series that really didn't look like one another. It's great we're getting the "Classic" Evil Seed, and it's also great we got this one. I prefer the "classic" design, but the 2K Evil Seed is a spectacular figure with tons of new parts and some pretty great accessories. "Evil plant guy" is enough reason to buy this, much like Callix [FOTD #1,287] worked well as "cool rock dude."
The fun thing about a line like this is some things get better as you go, and Evil Seed gets to benefit from something most figures lacked. The Four Horsemen did a spectacular job of updating the 2002-era design to a figure. Sure, at first glimpse you'll go "Uh, Swamp Thing?" but that's OK. It's a plant guy, and given we already have Moss Man it's reasonable to make a different looking guy. The figure is covered in vines - some are connected to his "armor" vest, while others are actually parts of a "shorts" piece around his waist. The ones on his forearms are sculpted, though, and he has a few thorns on his person as well. You'll notice little veins and cracks all over, giving him a look that could potentially be adapted to some sort of lizard or snake man down the road. His face looks like it's burning from within, complete with a face that looks like Darth Vader and a furnace got together to give you nightmares. A trunk for hair and a huge collar make this guy look severely evil, which works well given his name.
I don't see any evidence that paint was skimped on here, given some darker green shading around the middle and painted claws/nails bring him to life in a fantastic way. Red eyes and bags under his eyes show someone who looks intense, and that would be a good way to categorize the evil walking plant guy.
He has two accessories. One, surprisingly, is the Scepter of Power from the Filmation cartoon - a perfect gold and red addition to any Eternian royalty you may have handy. It also fits in his hand nicely. The real winner is an attack vine which wraps around his arm and hand, complete with a biting venus flytrap-esque head. It really is glorious, and comes painted with vines and all sorts of sculpted bumps. How can you not love it?
For whatever reason this stayed unopened in my photo room for 10 months. (I get a lot of toys coming through here.) I really missed out - this is a fantastic figure that works independently of the brand, delivering on the "here's a cool Four Horsemen figure" promise we all truly want in the first place. Some characters are just kind of silly when removed from the context of the brand or cartoons, but Evil Seed just plain works with exceptional design and typical-for-the-line articulation. Get one if the price is good.
