I bought two random blind box Blokees last year to see what they were like, and one of them was Ratchet. The character takes inspiration mostly from the cartoon deco, with some neat embellishments. The white helmet with black crest is pure Sunbow, as are the red hands and red cross shoulders - a feature frequently missing due to conflicts with the Red Cross organization. Why is it OK here? Honestly, I don't know.
Ratchet is a 4-inch tall robot figure. As with the others, many of his parts are shared with the other figures - heck, there's even another version of Ratchet with LEDs in him that shares a lot of the very same parts. What makes this one more than a little interesting is a screen with an EKG-like design on a blue screen, which is pretty nifty and painted right on. You don't have to deal with any stickers here - just pop the parts out of the frames and 10-20 minutes later, you have what is probably the lowest-priced action figure kit you can buy in American stores right now. Mine was $4.97, which is almost mind-boggling. That was "cheap" back in 2000 - when you saw a Hasbro Zoids kit for around that price, or a Simpsons figure, or an Attack of the Clones figure, that was pretty impressive back then. With two decades of inflation, a lightly decorated figure like this - with shared parts, and outsourced assembly - is probably as good as we're going to see for a while.
His blaster is the same as Bluestreak's, but Ratchet has an orange clear blast effect for his blaster. That's a nice bonus. He also has black line art on the red parts of his torso, plus yellow lights around his chest. It's pretty good for a figure that could be unpainted, or blank with cruddy stickers, and would still be perceived as good for the price. "Value" is a concept that's largely dead on collector- or fan-driven action figures these days, so it's remarkable that even a quasi-cutesy import could be - to put it mildly - priced so low that cost is no longer an issue. Five bucks is nothing for a toy, but waiting in line at Walmart will probably be the great sorter here.
With over 20 joints and a display stand, I've had Ratchet on my desk for a couple of months. I don't think I want to collect this entire scale - there are so many series already it's going to be space-conscious for me - but I enjoy the two I bought, and would recommend getting one for a fun desk bot. I also was convinced of the quality enough to order a case of the smaller guys coming out later this year, because something Battle Beasts sized is a bit easier to absorb in a time of my life where I start to look around and ask "So how much longer do I want to hang on to all of this?" In the case of Ratchet, I'd certainly like to keep him around for a bit, and I think you would too. If you don't already have an extensive Transformers toy collection, I'd nudge you to give these guys a shot. Just the 2024 collection is a pretty good mix of characters, and if it keeps going I assume many of your favorites will be available on the cheap very soon. Just keep in mind, they can't transform.
