Revenge of the "prepaint!" Bumblebee Brilliant from Blokees takes the friendly yellow and black robot, and casts him in silver and gold. The shiny, swirly plastic is gorgeous but I'm expecting to hear it'll crumble in the decades to come because that tends to be what happens. We'll see how it works out - it's a stunning figure in person.
Bumblebee Brilliant is a 2-inch tall robot, and every joint is a ball joint. You have to assemble it, and everything pops in place. His eyes are a blue cylinder crammed inside his head, and most parts are molded in color. The blue windshield, red Autobot symbol, silver headlights, and black bumper are actually painted. Oh, and the silver face, too. The Autobot symbol is raised and glossy, and it looks fantastic. The sculpted details are all fairly simple, and a lot of parts are shared with other figures in the line. (For example, a plain yellow Bumblebee in series 2.)
The colors look great, and my only complaint is they didn't paint all the windows the same color. There's this amazing comic book art shine on one window, and nothing on the others. You might not notice, and for $3 I am not at all upset. It doesn't turn into a car, but also, it's $3.
By reusing parts and outsourcing assembly to the customer, you actually still can make very affordable toys. We saw this with Zoids and G.I. Joe vehicles until the early 2000s - and of course, a lot of Gundam kits. Why we don't see this for more American-marketed toys, I don't know, but the results are decent if you want a Battle Beasts-sized robot for less than soda at a restaurant. I wish I had this little guy when I was a kid - and I hope Blokees builds out the scale with more characters and licenses. I got my money's worth.
