Onell Design Outer Space Men OSM Cyclops Zardurac Action FigureOne of the recurring questions in any toy collecting game is, eventually, the issue of "Do I want to buy another version of this character?" Grumpy me says yes, because OSM Cyclops Zardurac is a different and distinctive enough take on the man from beyond the Milky Way that it becomes interesting. It also, surprisingly, had a larger production run which had not sold out prior to arriving in my hands a mere 4 days after placing my order. Not 4 business days, but I ordered Thursday and got it Monday. That's bonkers fast. (As always, thank you Matt for the fast delivery and the bonus goodies. Oh, the bonus goodies.)

I've got enough Cyclops figures - more than enough, really. To date only two of the seven Cyclops figures have significant quantities of paint - this one, and the Infinity Edition Cyclops [FOTD #696]. Both have pretty amazing paint jobs, the Infinity Edition is a white figure completely slathered in pigment while the 2017 Zardurac edition is molded in a dark pink with purpe, blue, and white highlights. It doesn't add any new tooling or functionality, but you can do a lot with color.

The core figure has 15 parts which pop apart at the Glyos joint - and you can swap them between other Glyos-compatible figures. In addition to that, you've got a flight cap, a 2-piece helmet, 2 alternate fists, 2 blasters, and 2-piece armor. That's a lot of parts, and it's a heavy figure when compared to the featherweight peers from the rest of this line and most other Glyos makers. (Maxx Zero gives him a run for the money, though.) As always, the figure has no problem holding his blasters but it's a tight fit. I'm 99% sure they're painted the purple color, which gives them the added snuggness in the fists. The paint is so solid that it could be molded in color - but I assume it is not since we didn't see spare purple gear show up in the drop. That I know of.

Cyclops' articulation is the best the 1980s would have to offer - each piece swivels with a grand total of 14 on the base figure. The neck turns, the wrists spin, the feet can swivel out, and you can get a decent amount of motion form the elbows. It's not a ball joint, but this isn't that kind of figure - but it is supremely sturdy and sporty. Unlike the previous painted Cyclops, finger claws and toe claws don't match - the hands are purple to match the painted palms of the hands. It's a nice touch, with blue breaking up the sea of purple at the shoulders, underpants, ankles, wrists, and the Pheyden face on the chest. My sample stands and sits well, with tight joints that don't require a fight to move.

As always, Matt Doughty made sure to make matching figures - this time around, Cyclops' brothers are a Pheyden and a Crayboth. Cute! It's like a family. Or maybe those are his toys. Sadly, I assume time or budgeting have resulted in far fewer comics and video games based on the Onell Design characters in recent years so we really don't know much about what "Zardurac" means, if anything, in the Glyos Universe. There are lots of fun little story threads in there, but I think a Xodiac back from 2011 may be the only time an Outer Space Men crossover got any tales. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm always worried that we're at the end of the road for the Outer Space Men, but it seems the license holders are carrying on with a wonderful suite of glow-in-the-dark figures and Astrodite this year, and hopefully Matt Doughty at Onell Design shares at least one more with us. I'm very fond of these unique colorways, particularly because they spread them out. I could see myself getting burned out fast if we had a new one every couple of months, but 2 or 3 a year? I'm still excited every time the mail shows up with a new box, because there are always impressive details like a dark outline around the eyes, horn, and mouth. It's a lively figure, and easily one of Onell Design's finer colorways on these guys. Granted from where I sit, they can do no wrong, so maybe you shouldn't believe me.
