QUICK Q&A WITH JOHN LINNELL
Partial Q&A session with one of the Twin Quasars of Rock, taken in a tour bus in front of The Cajun House in Scottsdale, Arizona on September 23, 2001. The tape got damaged, how we don't know, so here's part of what survived.
16bit.com: We've waited five years since your last studio album... will we have to wait another five years?
John Linnell: I hope not. We've made recordings in the meantime, unfortunately there were no actual physical CDs in that time. We did make an MP3 only release and we also recorded a children's album which we're hoping will be out next year.
16bit.com: I heard [Sony's children's division] Sony Wonder picked it up but something came up and it's still in limbo.
John Linnell: We're basically just waiting to find out when they're going to put it out. They're committed to doing it, and the question is a matter of when.
16bit.com: I heard a rumor-- well, a little more than a rumor-- that you guys have a documentary coming out next year. What can you tell us about that?
John Linnell: I think that it's mostly filmed... [filmmaker] AJ Schnack filmed right up to our record release party which was [September] 10, we basically finished filming. That was the record release party, and then we had a signing at Tower Records at midnight before the disaster. It was a very strange time to complete a project, before the whole world turned upside-down and all that. I think [AJ's] done. He's waiting to find out if it's gonna be admitted to Sundance. They extended the deadlines because of the recent happenings.
16bit.com: Have you guys been back to New York or Brooklyn since the disaster?
John Linnell: No, we were there when it happened... we were supposed to go to Boise, and we were supposed to fly, but that didn't really work out. We had various plans to fly-- the gear was already here, mostly, some of our stuff was still here, some wasn't. We sent the rest of the gear on ahead and on Thursday night we just got in the car and drove all the way across the country to meet up with the bus. It was a pretty intense week, starting with our party, which was very exciting, then all this other stuff. With everything happening, I'm glad to be back at work doing something stable. Everybody at the offices was OK after the attack.
16bit.com: How did the songs Istanbul and Particle Man from your Flood album end up animated on Tiny Toon Adventures?
John Linnell: It's a boring story, actually. Somebody came to us and told us they wanted to animate them for this new show-- we thought it was a joke. They said "Steven Spielberg is producing this new Warner Brothers cartoon that focuses around baby versions of Looney Toons characters, and we want to animate your songs. Here's some money." And it just kinda ended up there.
