DC Direct's Pocket Super Heroes line was part of an early 21st century figure trend-- nearly every company wanted a "block" figure it could repaint to death and make collectible. Art Asylum had its Minimates, Medicom was top dog with its Kubrick line, Palisades had Palz, and there were a whole mess of the things. DC Direct made a pretty reasonable effort with Sinestro and several other characters but left out heavy hitters like Batman and Superman for reasons unknown. You want me to collect? I'm gonna need Batman. (These figures would come later, but a bad first impression lasts a long time.)

DC Direct Pocket Super Heroes Sinestro Action FigureEach roughly 3 1/4-inch figure has six points of articulation and effectively the same sculpt. The heads change, but the bodies are all pretty much the same thing. (Mattel does this with its DC Universe Classics line, for the most part, with a few changes.) Sinestro came packaged in his blue and black costume, which existed before the whole Yellow Lantern thing really took off. While the painted detail was decent and the stylized features were actually quite charming, the figure was made of a harder plastic that didn't really feel like a plaything. The legs were stiff and hard to bend, but at least they looked nice in the packaging.

The line lasted a few years but by about 2004, that was pretty much it. Sinestro wasn't the only one of Green Lantern's nemeses to see plastic, as other characters like Guy Gardner and the delightful Guardian would also see release. With so many different Sinestro toys out there I can't honestly say this is your best bet, but at the right price it's cool. I got this figure (and Hal Jordan) in a 2-pack blowout at a Tower Records at some point around 2003 for two bucks. At more than $2 per figure I don't think you'll get much out of these-- just spring for the bigger and better Mattel and DC Direct releases unless you want something that could be compatible with your Playmobil toys.
