Unlike her companion, the Hybrid Armor Ankylosaurus basically requires her armor to look cool. The I-Rex looks awesome with or without the armor plating, but under the Monster Kolor metallic spike toupee the Ankylosaurus is pretty bland and unpainted. The rest of her is great - the metallic green to purple is just gorgeous, and the dark brown spots look fantastic.
If you lose the armor, it's not quite as cool. If you want an unadorned dinosaur, get the original Ankylosaurus [FOTD #1,216] release. But don't stop there - get this new one too. The ridiculous spike jacket really adds a lot of heft to the figure, and it just feels better with the added plastic wad on board. The enhanced contrast between the plastic skin and the spots looks great - heck, there's even a little brown mustache and bright white teeth!
The main reason to get this toy is so your dinosaur may engage in Kaiju Cosplay. The metallic spikes just look spectacular - and they hug the figure quite tightly. The little tail enhancer slips over and grips quite nicely as well. This is the dinosaur you buy to fight your Godzillas or your Gipsy Dangers. The tail bashes down when you tug on the leg, and when you push it forward her head moves. Will you do this? I assume no. Most likely, you'll pass on it for a few years and then pay triple on eBay. Do not do this. You don't want to miss the crazy armored creature's armor, which will no doubt be missing if/when you spot one in a thrift store.
The armor fits like a glove - I assume the tail will not get lost, but the body armor's weight may cause it to flop off over time with a lot of play. It is perfectly fit to fit over the spikes on the plain body, so you can have the other toy wear these pieces if you want. Given that the new version has a little green on the actual body, I advise you not do this. It fits best here. Since Hasbro has no interest in killing children, the spikes are a little bit soft so nobody has to go to the emergency room. Again, this is appreciated.
Fans of weirdness, vinyl monster toys, and the shadow of the Chaos Effect from 1998 should track this down. I ordered it from the place I work because I decided I didn't want to wait to miss it - pre-orders are a good way to do that, and also show support by buying a toy online rather than picking one up at the store after kids fondle it post-nose picking. But I digress. The figure has articulated legs plus the mechanism-enhanced head and tail, giving you a decent toy at a price I'd gladly pay. If it were a smidgen more, thanks to the extra parts and paint, I don't think I'd complain much. Get one if the chance exists. As of last week, I've started seeing these in Walgreens and Toys R Us.
