Big stores sometimes get a special gift set for Christmas in massive quantities, as was the case with Walmart's Imaginext Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous Dino Pioneers set. Massive quantities of these were sold at the store, frequently far away from the toy aisle, so it's possible you never saw one. For $20 you got an XL Raptor in green, the human kid figures of Ben and Darius, three baby dinosaurs, and two vehicles. This is, in and of itself, a pretty good deal but I don't collect the line in a big way, the last thing I bought was a $4.99 Swamp Thing [FOTD #2,707] in 2024. And I liked it. But when I saw this massive boxed set for $5.00 on clearance? I didn't want to skip it, it's too much toy for the money. It almost doesn't matter if I want it or not - for $5 I get to write about it, play around with it, and that's more entertainment than your average movie ticket will give me.

So, was it worth the five bucks? Obviously.

The big guy is an XL Raptor in green, with a light green belly and glassy eyes. It's mostly molded in color - the black claws are black plastic, the light green is a unique piece, and so on. It feels pretty hollow, and the glassy eyes look pretty striking. The arms and legs are jointed on this 9-inch dinosaur, and there are some gaps on the underside of the tail tip. Why there's a giant Raptor along with a bunch of little guys, I assume, must be "value." A big dino like this is normally $10 or more, so it's arguably the selling point of a set people will buy for some kid and go "and now I'm done shopping."

The motorcycle is Owen's bike, minus the silver on the pipes. That's a pretty clever reuse - it's a fine vehicle, and the mold was handy. What's particularly interesting is that the wheels are just wide enough to aid the bike in staying upright without assistance. Any figure can ride it, but it seems well-suited to a smaller figure like Darius. It's cool, your kids will like it.

The ATV/quad/whatever has some faux-shocks and seems ideal for sandbox or outdoor play. It has a big area for pretty much any figure to ride it, and everything is molded in color. The red "i" launches a claw rocket - and it's amazing just how exciting it is to see. It shouldn't be, but look at most action figures today. Nothing shoots, action features are in decline, so a little quad with rolling wheels and a silly claw that would've been a shrug in 1992 once again seems innovative today. It's a recolor of another quad, but hey, it's nice.

The two human figures - Darius and Ben - are carry-overs from cheaper sets with various dinosaurs or other things. Darius is a lot smaller than my other Imaginext figures, but is built the same way. Ben may well be an existing figure with a new head, but I can't easily spot which one - he's chunky and I assume this is an adult body with a new head. Both have good paint and, as Imaginext goes, look like the characters on the Netflix show I have yet to watch. They're fine.

With absolutely no articulation come the hatchling dinosaurs. They're basically accessories, but the sculpts are sharp with nicely painted eyes. You get an orange raptor, a blue Indominus Rex, and a green Spinosaurus. They're basically little rubber guys, but harder plastic. They all have foot peg holes that you will most likely never actually use, so really they're just cheap dinosaurs to round out the set. The skin texture is great, the eyes are sharp, they're just fun goofy little guys that remind me of the unpainted cheap toys sold to most of us when we were kids. If they were a couple of bucks each, you'd probably be pretty happy with them. They seem rugged.

Now that the set has been cleared out of most stores, you probably won't stumble on one any time soon. I can say it's at least $20 worth of toys, and probably great as a gift for some kid in your life. If I didn't already have a decent Imaginext toy collection I wouldn't have bought it, even at $5, and I mostly got it because I was very interested in seeing how the vehicles turned out. I'll probably keep the entire set for a long while, and I would think any dino-loving little kid would be pretty happy to get this box of figures. For adult collectors who buy Imaginext, if you want this stuff, it's worth the asking price. I wouldn't recommend chasing it down, though, as there are plenty of similar toys to be had online or maybe in a $3 thrift store bag near you.
