October Toys' October Toys Mini Figure Guys is one of the most fun lines to collect, even if it's dang near impossible to keep up with everything. Thankfully they're cheap, and if you show up on the 15th of each month at noon you can grab one or two new guys for two bucks. This month's new release is a new sculpt called Brocotal, based on a small vegetable cast by Mr. George Gaspar and augmented with some nifty creature features. Standing roughly the same height as other minis - 1 1/2-inches tall, or neck-high to a LEGO man - it sold out in a few minutes. And then more went up... and also sold out.
The nature aspect of the figure is exquisitely captured with incredibly fine detail. The knobby and bumpy back of the figure is a sight to behold, especially when compared to most other mini-figures - this is anything but simplistic. The top of it looks sort of like a pointy hat, and it goes all the way down to form a tail which acts to balance the figure on your desk. When my wife saw it she was also reminded of Jesse Narens' creation, the Stegoforest. That sizable dinosaur design which should be seeing a vinyl release shortly.
The rest of Brocotal is sort of a weird little gnome/dinosaur/hipster thing, complete with a thin artisanal mustache and gigantic beard. His belly is a little portly, hanging over his waist with enough gusto to let you know that he does indeed enjoy cookies. The legs extend down with feet that look like they came off a large dinosaur or elephant, complete with wrinkly detail. Cast in green, this figure looks utterly fantastic - the other ones look good, but frankly there's nothing else that looks quite like this out there. And thankfully, it will be issued again in different colors over time.
While the color doesn't match most other minis, the figure certainly feels at home with my other October Toys figures. In some respects I don't know why I'd review this because at two bucks it's less of a "should you buy it?" than a "can you find one to buy?" situation. What's more, the October Toys crew threw in a mini glow-in-the-dark Gwin, a small penguin based on Tux the Linux mascot. (We'll get to him soon.) If you're still collecting one-color minifigures, like most good people should, go ahead and get this one - or a different color - as soon as life allows it. It's utterly strange and fantastic.
