I can't say I always understand the naming of Hasbro action figures, because this figure is a 6-inch Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes and the 3 3/4-inch one is named Iron Patriot. Approvals? Oversight? Someone trying to avoid something like Marvel's Iron Patriot? I have no idea. I do know it's a pretty good figure for something I got for seven bucks at Ross, and even at the original $15 asking price it's a pretty decent desk toy. It's not really a fun kid toy, but with 22+ points of articulation he has no problems staying standing unassisted and posed nicely for months at a time.
The price of this assortment has stayed pretty low, so you can probably get the set for a more or less decent price. Slower seller Ultron has creeped up thanks to the new movie, though, so do some price comparing before buying any of these. I like Iron Patriot a bunch and in hindsight, I probably should have just bought him and Iron Man MK 43 and called it a day - but man, those dumb build-a-figures are tempting aren't they?
The 6 1/2-inch tall metallic blue figure has a swirly texture that makes me a little nervous for its long-term prospects, but for now it looks pretty slick. (See: Gold Plastic Syndrome.) The plastic color really sings nicely, although metallic blue paint over blue plastic would have been gorgeous. The silver and red metallic paint look great, as do the tampos with his name and rank on the fornt of the armor. Little details like this and a star on his arm make it a heck of a lot better than the $10 version, and a decent alternative to the 1:6 scale versions which are priced competitively with your car payment.
With double-jointed elbows plus bend-and-swivel wrists, the figure is capable of assuming some pretty decent poses. The joints are stiff enough to not sag under months of standing still, and there's a plug-in cannon on his back with a few moving parts. Getting it to look good is a bit of a nuisance, but it's a decent accessory. More decent is Iron Monger's arm - getting that big figure assembled is a pretty satisfying experience, and big build-a-figures like this do wonders to sell lesser figures. I had no interest in getting the many non-movie Iron Man variants - but I wanted the Iron Monger, so here we are.
