I never had the original as a kid, so I was fairly curious what a new version of Sunstreaker would be like. It looks a lot like the original toy... which was kind of a hot mess. It's one of the first Diaclone cars, and it shows. The proportions with ape-like gorilla arms and massive fits were weird, and while there were some interesting tweaks made in the fist department it's still something of an odd monster. It seems to be pretty much the same size and proportions of the original toy - that's good - and it looks like a toy from 40 years ago. It's an interesting beast, as I think Takara-Tomy did a nice job with it, and also, I don't like it. That seems like they did it right.

Packaged in a boxed box, there's a big cardboard rectangle to keep the black Hasbro box' form. There's a styrofoam insert, because you're supposedly not throwing it away, that's the job of your descendants. I'm opting to not use the stickers yet (or at all), but there are some included to customize the toy. As is, it's pretty close to G1 right out of the box. You get the red shoulders, the stickered headlights, even an Autobot symbol on his chest. Some of the "stickers" are actually fully-painted sculpted detail which gives you something I'd never even want to consider covering up. It looks right. And wrong. But mostly right.
As a G1 kid I had Bumblebee and some other minicars, Dinobots, Soundwave, and random toys - but none of the full-size cars or trucks. I'm impressed that it's a nice plastic, die-cast metal, and rubber car that rolls fairly well and feels like a number of other Hasbro releases I've had the pleasure of checking out over the years. You can plug in the boosters to the back of the car, but the rest of the accessories are yours to lose or store. There's a rubsign on the side, and I think the average fan would see the car mode and assume it's an original.
What I liked is it retained - and used - the Diaclone feature. This set incudes a tiny driver figure, and you can lift up the roof and have him sit inside. That's a nice bonus and a real play feature. That's good, because they took some out.

Transforming the toy is fairly easy and quite enjoyable. Takara-Tomy made sure the various mechanisms that click and make lovely little noises as you go still work, as you stretch out the legs, unfold the arms, and do whatever nonsense is happening in the chest region. Unlike the original, you have an option for the hands. You can plug in the fists with no pegholes, like the original toy, or you can open the forearms and fold out jointed hands with opening fingers that can hold a new chrome blaster. That's a nice quality of life improvement.

It's worth noting that while you can see little buttons on his arms, they're ornamental. You can't fire fists or launch rockets here. You can mount these in the arm sockets, if you like. This is sort of the whole adult toy evolution: the action features are removed, and you're given more articulation.

He looks a lot like the original robot, which means he has huge arms and his blaster barrel scrapes the ground if it's pointing down. You now have rocker ankles, jointed knees, arms that can pivot out, and a robot figure that can assume a number of poses. What's kind of a downer is a lot of fans will open him and either store him in the box, or put him in the same pose as the G1 toy and not make use of the added features. That's wh o we are, really. I kind of wish they kept the firing fists.

Due to licensing, the COUNTACH sticker was left out but it's otherwise very similar to the original toy. Again, as a non-expert, it's good enough for me to not demand a reissue of the G1 mold. (Supposedly, it's lost forever.) I love the added vac-metal blaster, and the little improvements do look better than photos of the original toy. Current eBay prices for an original 1984 Sunstreaker are only slightly more than this new one. As much as I like history, I gotta go with the one with the better hands and the blaster.
