I got a lot of un-reviewed figures, and someone wrote in asking about a Playmobil figure recently. This resulted in my discovering I haven't actually published and finished a review of the German toy line since 2023, so let's kick January off by going back to five days a week reviews starting with the Protestor. I honestly wasn't sure what she was at first - my note was "Stomp?" This makes sense. Here in the deserts of America, most protestors are just people with megaphones and signs who get tired after an afternoon and go home. Someone in urban camo, with a can and a stick and muddy boots? I don't see that here.

Playmobil is an amazing line that has a weird history in America. As a kid, I remember seeing a few sets at Kmart here and there, and then they disappeared from most big chains but showed up at mom and pop toy shops, which basically no longer exist, for the late 1980s and much of the 1990s. In Arizona you could count on seeing a ton in Hobby Bench, Little House Toys, or maybe The Doll House on a good day. Target would stock more as the decade went on, ToyCo and Toys R Us would carry more and more, and then about five years ago after the licensing boom things started to slow down at mass market stores again. I bought a couple of cases of blind bags, and found some at Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Only (RIP), but I don't even see blind bags at the indie shops anymore. Walmart doesn't carry these anymore. Occasionally I'll see a set at Ross or Marshalls, but it feels like it really retreated from the US market since the end of Scooby-Doo and Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. They were great!

And the pink bag girl figures are amazing. Sure, you might get a big poofy dress, but you might also get somebody like this. She has an awesome black and white camo pattern, what I assume is a brown leather cuff, jorts, tights, boots, and mud deco on the boots. Mud! We don't even get mud on most of the farmer figures. She has blue eye shadow, pink cheeks, and great yellow hair. And attitude, which is rare on these figures. If you just need a random figure to fill out any sort of crowd or street display, this is it.

She had just the right amount of gear with a black not-pearl necklace, a beanie, a drum stick, and a can of ravioli to beat. I love that. A lesser toy company might just give you a can without a label, but not Playmobil. They want you to know your protester enjoys canned pasta meals. Or maybe she's protesting them. I guess this is where imagination comes in.

On a personal note I think the reason I stopped posting reviews was that I actually got to a point where I got my "dream sets" from when I was a kid as well as things I didn't think we'd ever see made. I always wanted a manatee, mammoths, and I even picked up some vintage space sets... and the Enterprise. And a bunch of 1980s licenses I never dreamed we'd see. I felt like I got more than I could ever possibly enjoy... and I was right! So I stopped buying new figures, but have tons and tons of stuff to post that I frequently got cheaply that is just sitting here. Maybe you'll see something you dig, too.

I'm noticing very few American sellers with these mystery bag figures on eBay, and shipping from overseas is pricey. If you stumble on a blind bag in the store, maybe take a gamble because you could end up with any of a number of cool figures like a socialite, a Day of the Dead dress that's fantastic, a firefighter, a woman with a genie bottle, an equestrian, or several others. Playmobil's figures are pretty durable and have been around for 50 years, mostly as unlicensed toys aimed squarely at kids. You can grab chainsaws, fire extinguishers, dinosaurs, guinea pigs, space ships, fairy wings, hamburgers, and almost any non-licensed accessory you can imagine to build out a pretty solid toy box. I'm going to try to get through more of my stash this year.
