Hasbro Transformers Age of the Primes Leader G2 Universe Dinobot Snarl and G2 Universe Dinobot Slug

Even though they're simple deco changes, I can't quite believe Hasbro made a $110 2-pack with G2 Universe Dinobot Snarl and G2 Universe Dinobot Slug. It makes sense to squeeze more toys out of the very good, in-demand molds, but it's amazing that they bothered with 1993 recolors like these. Hasbro took existing cartoon molds, in cartoon colors, and did their best to make them look like those toys to mostly great results. I would say it meets expectations for the nature of the product, but those wanting metal or vac-metal silver bits? Cross your fingers Missing Link gets some Dinobots before you're too old to care.

If you missed the first releases these are pretty good, and if you also have shelves devoted to modern nouveau G2 stuff? You already bought these.

For those keeping a G2 Dinobot tally, Hasbro did a Blue G2 Grimlock [FOTD #2,888] earlier this year. In 2023, Hasbro put out a yellow prototype-inspired G2 Grimlock [FOTD #2,656] as part of a Walmart exclusive Toxitron capsule. There's also a regular Studio Series 86 Grimlock and a Marvel Comics deco Grimlock. Assuming you only buy deco variants and not package variants, you might have about 10 Leader-class Dinobots by now. That's a lot! And there are still opportunities for more, and after that Hasbro could do "toy molds" with the clear parts and other accessories too. This is a long ride, and shelf space starts to whimper and cry as Hasbro listens to fans and gives us precisely the kinds of things we ask them to make.

Snarl returns with what I'm told is the most common Generation 2 redeco, red! My memory of the red arms and legs were that they weren't quite as desaturated, but I may not have seen one up close in quite some time. The figure seems to match online reference photos, with a bright red chest that matches my memories. The figure's head is painted like the toy head with a silver crest and silver face, plus red eyes. As with the original squirt of the mold, this figure includes limited fux-sticker deco. The chest croshairs remain, and there are some extremely subtle red paint-on-red plastic highlights that may not be visible in some lights. You also get some neat blue vents on the chest, plus black highlights on the arms and legs that lack some of the color of the original toy's labels. I think they did a pretty good job, but in their shoes I'd have dropped the red paint on the red limbs and pocketed the pennies or put other color elsewhere. It is an appropriate redeco, but does not have a lot of dazzle power. It delivers the promise, it is what you expect.

Transforming Snarl has a lot of "Am I going to break this?" moments, so I didn't find it terribly enjoyable to revisit. After much panel exploding and holding of breath, you get a nice chunky Stegosaurus. The tail is still angled between the legs, but it's basically pretty good. Red body, red eyes, it looks like what you would expect from this mold.

Slug - previously Slag - also takes a cartoon design and slathers it in a toy flavor. I think this one is a little more interesting, thanks to the green limbs and other toy details. For example, you can see silver on the mouth, blaster, and frill. The horns are red. The robot head is black, with red eyes. It reminds me more of the G1 toy I had as a kid, minus the distinctive sword. Like Snarl he has some toy-ish deco, and the knees now have silver instead of blue and green paint. Some black deco on the limbs looks perfectly nice, and feels about as good as the regular edition. I'll be curious to see if people take this toy, and the first toy, and swap parts to make something that looks more like the "toy" colors from 1985. The green is a little darker than I remember seeing in stores, but it's distinctive and should look great on a shelf next to the others. I'll need a bigger shelf to confirm this.

Transformation is still a bit of a pill - not as simple as the original toy - but the results are good. After exploding some bits, compressing the shoulders, and massaging panels in place, you get a nice little stumpy green Triceratops. There are places to mount accessories, like on the back, but it lacks the shoulder-mounted rocket launcher of the original. The blaster now integrates into the tail - a good choice - and the colors all go well together. Sadly, the Daniel sidekick figure was left out completely. I still think people are going to enjoy it, plus or minus the still skinny ankles.

Given price increases thanks to our current world, the set is fairly priced. It's $10 cheaper than two leader toys at 2025 prices, or exactly what you would have paid for two guys a year ago. It's a more limited interest item, so I'm happy to buy it at this price. 20 years ago this would be a part of a BotCon set and would likely have cost more than this for smaller toys. It's not cheap - but it's two 8 1/2-inch giant robots. While light on accessories, they're bigger on color. I think there will be a limit on how much Leader-class repaint product fans can absorb, but at least for now these are novel and fun. I'll take Swoop and Sludge too, if they're so inclined, but the only other Leader-size Dinobots I would probably buy afterward would likely be new molds of new characters.
