One of the things that made me really pay attention to this line when I saw it in a showroom in El Segundo last year was Optimus Prime Vehicle. A little truck with a little repair drone that turns the classic flat-nosed cab into a scooter for other figures to drive? That's adorable. I had to get a case. It's such a good idea.
Like Bumblebee's car mode, there are wheels but they're not super duper rolling things. They look cool, and they do move - but don't expect Matchbox-levels of mobility here. There are no foot pegs, but you do get handles on the repair drone that other figures can hold. As far as functionality goes, I'm impressed that it's a little better than the average toy vehicle in that it is a fun toy for your other little figures.
Blokees' team sculpted it nicely enough for the size, with mostly flat surfaces and not a lot of extraneous detail. I appreciate that they painted a lot of it, but sadly not all of it. Given the price, I'm not going to complain. The grille is silver, as are the smokestacks. The mirrors got a little silver too, as do the lights in front and on top of the cab. A glossy window tampo on the front - and not the sides - make it look like a much fancier toy. It's not perfect, but it's fairly excellent for the price. It's also worth noting they painted the drone's cockpit in a nice orange color.
I had little problem getting Prowl to grab the handlebars and ride the thing like some kid on a scooter. It takes some fidgeting, and yes the bar did rip his fists off, but you can pop them back on. It's not as frustrating as collector figures can be, but you will need to do some fidgeting.
Little figures are a dime a dozen, but little vehicles for tiny toys are kind of scarce. The Bumblebee in this set doesn't have the added play value, and Scavenger was a stealth combiner. It's interesting to see what we're getting out of a lower price point product, and I'm generally pretty pleased with what I'm getting from this line so far. My only complaint is the prepaints may be a little too creative, and there's a lot of product in a year. Four waves in a year is a lot to absorb - especially if you didn't start with wave one. At least they're fun, and I'd recommend tracking this one down.
