The fact that Masters of the Universe got new figures like Cy-Chop is pretty astounding, but it shows there's a real interest from a very loyal fanbase. When revealed at Comic-Con in 2012, I immediately got it-- blue fur, Micronauts-esque head, and big scissor hands? Awesome. I'm not sure if the face is meant to be someone (Ron Perlman comes to mind) but with the added silver deco, horns, and cybernetic enhancements it feels like somebody put a little Acroyear DNA in there, plus a figure which can run with sciessors. A plus.
Designed by one of the guys at Mattel responsible for this line being what it is, Cy-Chop is made of Beast Man, Roboto, and Trap Jaw parts which makes a lot of good sense, as he's supposedly Trap Jaw's reconstructed buddy out for revenge. He joined up with the Horde, and you have the option of displaying him with or without a big orange Horde belt. It looks good either way, and while I don't think I dislike it, I'd rather they have tossed in some fists for the figure rather than a belt. If you want, you can pop on fists from Horde Prime and some of your other figures. Cy-Chop doesn't suffer from the lack of hands, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss them. The big scissors are pretty cool, painted silver and blue, articulated and pretty easy to display. They don't seem like they're warping too much, but I assume anyone who packs this figure away and unpacks it a few years later may need to straighten them out. As-is for now, though, it's great.
Rather than retain Roboto's guts (and heart), this new figure has some more organs and mechanical bits in a blue clear chest cavity. My sample had no cracks, but my Roboto is fine still too. The silver paint and blue eyes do a great job of bringing out his personality and detail. While he doesn't look like a Horde figure, he does look like a lost 1980s action figure and for that, I am happy. He can also hang Trap Jaw's gear off his belt, so maybe some day we'll see orange Trap Jaw accessories in a future Weapons Pak for Cy-Chop? I can hope! That last accessory pack was the awesomest, and it didn't sell out particularly fast.
While I like this figure, I can't say that it's an essential purchase. As a cool action figure that just happens to be He-Man compatible, it's pretty cool. If I saw this at the store and it wasn't labeled MOTUC, I'd probably pick it up if the price were right just because it's so dang weird, ugly, and retro. It really does look like an old toy, which is all I can ask for in this era of "let's make everything grim and gritty and probably a black repaint." But if you're going to force me to nitpick, I wish he had shoes. The bare feet and claws remind me a lot of Beast from X-Men.
