The 2010 debut of this mold was a really awesome figure, and the new Autobot Jazz is loosely inspired by the Generation 2 release of the figure. The 1993 release of Jazz had numerous brightly-colored musical notes and the number one everywhere, while the new one has blue and orange, as well as a musical scale and random notes.
The name "Jazz" is written on the new figure's bumper and spoiler, so fans now sorta have a modernized Jazz for their G2 shelves while leaving the door open for a slavish recreation of the G2 figure in the future. Someone's gonna need to do it.
Arguably superior to the 2010 incarnation, the figure has molded off-white forearms, grey hands, and a liberal splashing of blue which brings out a lot of detail. I never noticed the sculpted triangles in his legs before this release, for example. The orange on his hood works great, as you get a bright symbol on his chest as well as the scale. I like how it looks, but in some respects it almost looks unfinished as the 1993 release seemed to have all the colors of the rainbow. This is almost subdued by comparison. Oh, and if this toy looks familiar to you go pull out your Cybertron Clocker from 2005.
Once again, his gun is cast from black plastic and can be combined with a pair of speakers into a larger weapon were you so inclined. It's a cool gun. The clamp-on speakers are also present, so you can make a bigger, more upgraded weapon. I'm not sure what adding speakers to a gun can do for its effectiveness, other than it presumably not acting as much of a silencer.
The car is a car. It's a nice car. It doesn't do much, but you can have it so the speakers pop out of the windows if you're in to such things.
I like this figure, and I was originally waffling on this set. And then it dawned on me that I'm the kind of person who picked up the G2 toys from Botcon 2010 and it seemed kind of dippy not to get this set at the comparatively lower price of $29.99. Combat Hero Optimus Prime and Jazz alone are worth the price of admission, with the Legends Motormouth and Thundercracker being swell bonuses. If the price is good when you happen to read this, the set is basically worth the asking price. Scroll waaaaay down for group shots of all 4 toys plus packaging photos.
