The original Astro-Nautilus is a big part of why I was so fascinated by these figures, and this new "Neonautilus" works well to remind me why. While not cheap, it's much cheaper than the previous Cosmic Creators incarnation and vastly different in appearance. It keeps the same mold, but by applying green skin and a purple suit, it feels like it came from a completely different era.
While not necessarily the prettiest belle at the ball, this take on the figure is pretty amazing up-close. The flat green skin has a fun toy feel, while the suit's rich metallic purple is really hard to capture and describe. The paint gives it an added feel of depth and weight, and the red eyes really pop right in the head. I like the standard design for its retro charms (and for being in Action Figure Digest when I was impressionable enough to care for new-to-me things), but this is a pretty nice take on the design. I really like the vastly different look and I'm hoping we see other recolors in the future.
I have no idea what the limited edition size is of these things, since it hasn't sold through I assume it will make sure the line stays cheap. As somebody who loves bright, glowing repaints of figures I think this quartet is one of the best things I've bought in 2012 and that's saying something. It was an expensive year, you know. Oh-- and if by some chance this is the first OSM review you read, take note that the figure is made with the Glyos construction, which means you can pop him apart at each of his 16 points of articulation and swap parts with other Glyos figures from Onell Design, RawShark Studios, Banimon, Spy Monkey Creations, and so forth. This pretty much guarantees your having to actually play with your toys, and since they come packaged on easily-opened-and-resealed packaging you should be happy about that. Get this set while you can!
