I can't honestly say I was super-pumped when Fang Man was shown, mostly because I didn't have the attachment to him as, say, Two-Bad. My lack of enthusiasm was completely misplaced as this is one great figure - the sculpting is delightfully cartoony while still true to the MOTUC line-up plus he's loaded with accessories and a nice bonus feature, an articulated tongue. You can really move it around, hanging out either side of his mouth or from in between his front teeth. Mattel makes some really expressive figures, but this dragon-based blue baddie actually has some options. You can open his mouth just a smidgen to move his forked tongue around, and that's a great feature to have.
At about 7-inches tall, Fang Man sports three completely new accessories, a two-part head, a new costume, and a nifty new outfit. His belt buckle and sword feature the character's face, and the painted detail is really something. Big, yellow glossy eyes bring him to life, complimenting his open-mouthed sneer. The figure has a collar on his shirt with painted gold rivets, and those match his bracelets. There's not a lot going on with his boots, but that's OK because all of his weapons have a decent amount of paint on them. Fang Man has the basic MOTUC construction, and it's hard to fault him for much beyond his general rarity. For reasons unknown, Mattel made him a subscription-only figure. I assume those reasons may be cost-related.
The figure's accessories are quite nice. The sword is big and log, with loads of detail like the aforementioned dragon face and a nice, pointed guard over his hand. The Wheel of Time is a little cheaper, with a hollowed-out back giving it a slightly cheaper feel. It still has an awesome facade, though. The last weapon is said to come from a Filmation animation style sheet. I've heard it called a mace, it looks like a slingshot to me. I'm not sure what it's for, but the circles around the grip have a nice Jetsons vibe which I'm sure were not intentional. It does make it look like a much more futuristic weapon, perhaps one belonging to Elroy. I dig it.
2013 has been loaded with great figures in this line, like King He-Man and the meaty Ram Man. Fang Man may be one of the best-executed figures of the year, but I would have probably suggested Mattel to drop an accessory. Maybe it's just me being old, but when a figure has only two hands, three accessories can feel a little excessive. Of course, prices being what they are, it's probably a Catch-22. Prices are going up - how do you add value to a figure? How can you add value to figures without raising the price? Anyway, this is a good one. I never had a strong attachment to the character but he's one of my absolute favorites now that he's living on my desk for the foreseeable future.
