Batros? Batros. Golly! this is a good figure - one you never would've asked for, but it's delightful. Based on a Filmation episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe called "The Great Books of Mystery," the figure is given a surprisingly large amount of new parts including wings stuck to his forearms, a new head, a new collar, a new harness, and what I believe are new feet and shins. The rest of the figure is basically the standard He-Man buck with both wrist circlets, meaning it's new enough to be exciting. There aren't a lot of light purple figures in this line, after all.
At about 7-inches tall, this figure predates the Horde but looks like he cold be a charter member with a big red bat symbol on his chest - it wouldn't surprise me if the early Horde concepts influenced Batros or vice-versa. He looks a lot like Batman meets Man-Bat, minus the fact that he's pretty much unclothed. The skin looks great in purple, and the head looks appropriately cartoony with big yellow eyes featuring black outlines. Small fangs protrude from his lips, and a collar below his head helps to form a Batman-like cowl. It's a crying shame they didn't hold this one back for Halloween, as it really does feel like an appropriate figure for October.
He comes with a repaint of Spikor's club, which isn't bad but isn't necessarily exciting either. The weapon fits firmly into his Demo-Man hands, and is colored to match his wings quite nicely. The entire figure feels like such a pastiche of pop culture collectibles that its charm transcends its source material - if this were just some random plastic bat figure bootleg you saw the store, you'd probably still want to get one.
Because my interest in He-Man as a kid was largely on the cartoons, I'm really stoked to have this one. Of course, I also love the concept characters, and this one is well-constructed with no obvious paint smudging or other annoying issues. The nature of the outfit makes it difficult for the figure to impress - glossy black highlights on a flat black belt don't really say "wow" - but everything is where it should be and that's no small feat. Worth it, if you like it.
