With most toy reviews, I shoot it in the package, crack it open, write the review, and finish the shoot. With Clamp Champ I shot everything in July and didn't write it up until much later - a mistake on my part, this is a great figure and odds are any chance you had to get one at the original issue price is long gone. I loved the figure, but the character is basically a blank slate to me - I didn't have the original toy and he wasn't in the cartoons. All I really knew him as was a late-run filler figure with a large fan following who, as it turns out, replaces Man-At-Arms in the future of Eternia.
The 7-inch tall makes the most out of the existing buck, with new armor (vaguely Fisto-esque), a new head, and new weapons. Like Jitsu, his face sculpt is a little more intense and detailed than other figures in the line with deco that's just as good as the best of the best this line has to offer. For figure after figure, Mattel and the Four Horsemen have been knocking the figures out of the park with fairly clean paint jobs. The silver and metallic blue armor are offset by a few splashes of red, which work very nicely. If you collect this line you no doubt know that the figures are quite poseable and sport about 20 joints per figure, give or take depending on how accessories get in the way. Clamp Champ has an ab crunch joint that's largely obstructed by his armor.
This figure's accessories make it - the giant snake-grabbin' clamp is not spring loaded, but rather swings out and can be posed to your liking. The smaller weapon fits comfortably in his hand, and as you've no doubt assumed there are some gravity issues. You may wish to keep a doll stand nearby to keep him from toppling over, or just be careful about finding his sweet spot so he can stand up to Eternian invaders. Rather than just mold the clamp in silver, Mattel had it painted and that brings out a ton of detail. A few buttons and rivets are also decorated, making this one of the best-looking accessories in the line. I can only really complain about the fact that it isn't spring-loaded - it'd be a lot more fun if it was. As it is, it just looks like the best figure accessory in this line.
The figure has been a strong seller on the secondary market and has consistently been one of the more requested figures by He-Man fans, so it's no surprise really. Mattel did a great job here, so your only real reason for skipping this figure would have to be that you just don't want one. Depending on your figure focus I guess I could see that, but you'd be missing out on a high-quality release. C'mon, he can hang out with Thunder Punch He-Man in the tunnels of Sub-Ternia. It's good times, people, go ahead and snag this one if the chance comes up.
