Mattel He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection Spikor Action FigureSkeletor has no shortage of dum-dumbs in his employ, and this is one of the dumbest (on the cartoon, at least.) More streamlined than his "toy" counterpart, he had a paltry three appearances on the old cartoon. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Cartoon Collection Spikor turned out fairly well as Mattel stretched its comic branding to include many characters from the show, giving us great revisions of tons of figures. Surprisingly not among them a few years later: Sorceress, Zodac, Mekaneck, Kobra Khan, Jitsu, Fisto, and I could go on. Honestly I'm only feeling a couple of those are truly "missing" and the Sorceress really seems like an unfortunate loss, but when you line up Spikor and the Evil Warriors on Snake Mountain? Mattel's picks all look great together. The "Cartoon Collection" feels like a good - but not complete - collection. If I had to do Origins over again, I'd probably skip most of the "toy" line and just stick with these guys. Less is more sometimes.

Spikor has a unique body with slightly rubbery spikes. The arms, legs, and waist are pretty much the same as several other figures, but in pink/black. His hands are removable, so you can swap them out for his included trident accessory. There's no extending arm or telescoping feature - it's just the fork on the orange block, as seen in the pictures. While I'd love a play feature, collectors loudly insist on elbow joints. As such, elbow joints ye shall have.

He's taller and is pointier than his "toy" counterpart, looking less dumpy and more like his drawn appearance. I think going from the snout to a more traditional nose made a huge difference, and his glare does look a hair more menacing and less goofy. Of course, on the show he's just another dullard Skeletor hench. Here, he at least looks sharp, even if he himself is not sharp.

What's particularly striking about this figure - and Origins and the Cartoon Collection as a whole - are the colors. The pinks are bright, the blues and purples are rich, and hte blacks are, well, black. He poses well, you can swap out the hands easily, and he can hold those game pieces from "The Game" (the episode, not the Queen record.) His wrists even have the pink bands from the cartoons. I assume kids who had the original toy as a kid will disagree, but for me - a cartoon-only fan of the 1980s show - this is the version I want.

I love that Mattel decided to give most of these cartoon guys new and specific accessories from the show, but I've had this guy for over a year and I haven't really made much use out of the red and blue clear pieces. I like the fork just fine, but I'd almost rather have had a club (from the toy) or some random and unrelated totem from the show we could put with Skeletor. I think Mattel's designers did a good job of picking up a specific thing from the show with which to interact... but Spikor's appearances were few, brief, and not entirely exciting.

Now that we're in The Future, I can say I don't remember seeing this figures on store shelves much. His secondary market prices didn't completely plummet, so Mattel probably nailed the market demand for this guy pretty well. If this guy is one of your favorites, I think everybody can look at the figure and go "Yup, that's a Spikor! He looks good!" There isn't much room for a surprise in this one, but at least he gets the job done and looks great hanging out with the other Filmation Evil Warriors figures. If you too are a largely fair weather He-Man fan from the 1980s, I'd recommend just tracking down Cartoon Collection stuff first and fill in the gaps with Origins or crossovers as you see fit. Taken as a group, it's one of the most satisfying collector lines I've bought. And small, which helps. Infinite figures does not a good collection make, so now I have to decide if I want to ditch Origins toy Spikor or store him. Cartoon Spikor has usurped his place on the shelf above my fireplace.
