I remember this Batman Bane figure in stores as a quasi-epic pegwarmer, alongside Ra's Al Ghul at Kay-Bee toys for around $3.99, or 3 for $10, or whatever the deal was. For a while. Years. I'm pretty sure they were still around in/after the year 2000, which is kind of sobering to think about. There used to be toys that were made in slightly too big of a number, and those toys could wind up at Toy Liquidators, Kay-Bee Toys, Macfrugals, Tuesday Morning, Factory 2U, or any of a number of stores that simply no longer exist. That end of the toy digestive tract has been largely replaced by Ross, Ollie's, DD's Discounts, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls, most of which have been around for quite some time too. Maybe it's a gradual shrinking of the business, or right-sizing production runs, or something - but if you're some kid at a mall with five bucks, you can't get a toy anymore. There are also not malls in a lot of areas any more, so it's kind of funny to look back at a guy like Bane - who just didn't sell - as something of a fixture of the endgame of toy retail for years.

With only 5 joints, the then-new character came out of nowhere in 1993 and would quickly find additional life in the cartoons, movies, and toy aisles. The overly-muscled character felt very much of his time, but this animated version was a little more timeless. The luchadore-esque character took on a mask closer to that of familiar faces like El Santo, with a visible mouth and a more expressive facial design. He's huge - easily the biggest chest in Kenner's line housed a spring-loaded mechanism. Rotate back the arms and lock them in place, and push a lever down to slam the arms down or toss a girder. Back in the 1990s most Batman toys had some form of action feature, usually built into the accessory, although some had spring-loaded limbs or a wheel-based mechanism.

Adjusted for inflation, this figure would probably be about ten bucks today - a solid deal, but adult collectors really put their thumbs on the scale for articulation over play. Today's kiddo Batman figures tend to have elbows and knees, but rarely a punch action, a firing rocket, or a really cool squirting jet pack. As an older collector, a figure like this puts me in a weird position wondering what might sell better to kids. Would it be something with a fun play feature, or the ability to pose? When I was a kid I was surprised how many of my peers preferred G.I. Joe to all else for their knees and elbows. I don't see a lot of toy features in the kid toys I've picked up, so hopefully they're enjoying their elbow joints. I'd rather have a cool glider or a rocket launcher.

The sculpt is incredibly smooth, just like the cartoon. Warner Bros. Studio Stores (also formerly at malls) sold a lot of super-fancy high-end maquettes of characters from the show, and while they were cool I failed to see the value in them when Kenner had these guys for six bucks. The poses weren't as cool, but also, they weren't $150-$200. Bane's sculpt isn't much more complicated than the line art from the show - you get a venom hose connecting his skull to his wrist, a belt, and some very basic muscles (with veins) and boot laces. It's a figure that looks incredibly powerful, and a little goofy, towering over other Kenner figures at about 5 1/2-inches tall.

Today the figure is still more or less worthless - you can get one delivered to your door for under $20 pretty easily. Your local comic shop may have one in a box with an old price tag, collecting dust, and unloved. Given their crisp sculpts and low prices, I'd suggest giving these a look if you aren't all-in on McFarlane's very nice, and very well-priced super-articulated 7-inch figures at a Target or web store near you today. I don't know if a modern collector even wants toys anymore when mega-articulation or hefty statues are available, but there's something to be said for simplicity. And value. Also fun. Give these guys a look!
