I was putting together the Jetfire Vehicle kid and was going from "hunh" to "what?" and then eventually to "hmmm." Usually it's pretty obvious that a thing is going to be cool or not as you go, but this is an oddity. It looks like Skyfire - the cartoon version - more than the Macross ship. I don't think anyone really needs to ask why, but that wasn't what had me scratching my head. Assembling it had lots of little b its that hint at a robot inside, like little not-feet on the back, and articulated not-legs underneath. I'm trying to figure out if those little feet are secret hooks for a future combiner or other kit. Don't spoil it for me, I'll find out soon enough.

The mostly white jet is undecorated on the bottom, but features red, blue, and black detailing on top. The painted cockpit looks nice and shiny, as do the red stripes. Some very small black line detail hints at a much more detailed animation model and/or toy, and from a distance it looks pretty good. The wings sweep in and out from the back, and what I found useful were little legs that can fold down. They're connected by a couple of ball joints, and I was wondering why - and as I assembled it, it clicked. Literally. Just tip them down a bit, and the spacecraft levels out. It's a nice little toy ship, but it feels incredibly light. I don't dislike it, but it does not feel as substantial as its size may trick your brain into expecting.

This little guy breaks from the usual format, giving you a pretty chunky little vehicle with enough color to make you feel like you got something of value. What's still curious to me are a number of pegs and expansion sockets that clearly are going to be reused somewhere for something - maybe on a kit I haven't yet opened. Even though it doesn't transform, it does a nice job of making you remember that the design could, maybe, if they felt like it. It's a nice build, and I'm sorry I didn't have it as a child.
