Coming up with new monsters is tough, and the Vampire Bat gave LEGO another grab at the bat body mold while giving you another creepy flying dude. The body was used for the Manbat in Monster Fighters but that one was brown, and even more evil looking. The figure has fundamentally the same build as a regular figure except the arms stick out instead of resting at the side of the body. The joints still rotate, and the fists still twist, but now he's in sort of a permanent "flight" position.
The paint on this figure is quite different from that previous release, but thanks to the coloring it almost looks like some sort of gorilla if you ignore the arms... and how can you? The webbed wings protrude nicely, giving the figure a much wider presence than most of his peers. I hope to see this adapted to other creatures in the future. You won't find a lot of fine detail on the body, just some hairy lines and, for some reason, a six-pack. It's a simple design and it does the trick.
His head has a little more going on, with two shades of grey to offset the bright red eyes and white fangs in his mouth. His ridged brow and toothy mouth look pretty vicious, plus he has that upturned bat nose you've come to expect from finer fledermaus functions. It's worth noting that the hair and ears are a separate piece, a hat with painted light grey interiors to each ear. This is a nice touch, especially as an all-black figure tends to not have a bunch of detail by default.
This little guy is a tiny bit more expensive now, but you can probably score one for a little bit above its original retail price. I can't say it feels worth the premium - it's nice and all, but with no added accessories and this simple paint job it's hard to justify going nuts for it. I wouldn't say no to getting one - obviously, I didn't - but you can probably get better LEGO fun for your money in a polybag near the register at Target right now.
