Figures like the Baseball Player manage to act as stern reminders that these blind-packaged figures are actually not aimed exclusively at collectors, but kids and LEGO fans in general. While we salivate at the mouth when it comes to medieval bar wenches, orcs, aliens, or Blacktron-inspired cyborgs, dudes who hit some zingers aren't usually tops on our list. With no Major League Baseball branding, this player for the "Clutchers" looks pretty authentic-- he has a striped shirt with clear, crisp graphics printed in mostly black and red ink. If you get in real close, you can see a silver-painted belt buckle on the upper part of his legs, which I'm going to assume will be the first coloring to rub off over a few years in the toy bin.
This white plastic player even sports a baseball bat, which is white plastic painted brown. Considering the grip is going to see a lot of wear and tear due to the hands clamping it, this makes a lot of sense-- you'd want this to look nice. The red cap is the same mold used for the douchebag Rapper, now decorated with white paint and a big red "C" to indicate his team affiliation. Not content to have just a general smiley face, the figure has white in his eyes plus expressive eyebrows giving him a little more personality.
The one downer about sports figures if you're a fan is that you can't get an entire team easily. Sure, if you got dozens of them you could swap heads around and put together a diverse group of players to put on a bus or in the outfield, but that's going to require a lot of work. This wasn't a figure I was particularly looking forward to, but his hat, bat, and general look is hard to deny-- it's nice! It's no caveman, but it is a worthy addition to the growing line.
