While not an action figure as such, I'm trying to see if I can sneak in some handmade figural stuff every 100 FOTDs and this time we're going to look at Elly Font Art. Elly Font Art is an artist currently out of Atlanta, GA and someone I met as a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend when I lived in Los Angeles, and we hung out a bit. A few years later Elly is making these fine creations, most of which are hidden through Atlanta and announced on her Twitter account. I've hidden a few in various cities as well (New York and Phoenix so far), and will most likely be bringing some of these with me to San Diego for Comic-Con this year. (I've also kept a few samples, and as a matter of habit I photograph pretty much anything neat that passes through my home.)
These were created for #FAFATL, or Free Art Friday Atlanta. A bunch of creative types including graphic designers, artisans, and others hand-craft little cut-outs, figures, paintings, and other items for lucky people to find and not pay for. It's a pretty nifty idea, and one which expanded to include a small art show this year for the "May 4th" installment which is the Star Wars-themed drop. I was asked to distribute a few of these in San Diego for Comic-Con next week, so stay tuned to my Twitter and/or Tumblr with what items will be hidden around San Diego. It's free if you can find it, or if you find me, I guess I accept bribes.
Each of Elly's items are wooden, hand-painted, and pretty limited. I think most of them are one-of-a-kind, based on various holidays with a few pop culture characters here and there. She made Max Rebo, a Bantha, a Death Star, Sledgehammer Elephant from Battle Beasts, and numerous others in a fairly short period of time. (The Sledgehammer Elephant is my favorite, and it has my name written all over it.) I would suggest watching the Elly Font Art Twitter feed if you're looking to obtain these, and you can follow mine as well if you'd like as I'll drop some around every now and again. But the Elly feed is the one you need to follow. If you like what you see, please make contact @EllyFontArt via Twitter - you'll be glad you did. Because you might get something free if you are in the right city on the right day.
