The first two Batman: The Animated Series figures I bought were Scarecrow and Catwoman. At the time I remember wanting to get them at the now-defunct Best store because I loved the cartoon and they looked like fun. With years of hindsight, I also see both had animal buddies which drove a lot of my toy purchases. Isis the cat was featured in "The Cat and the Claw," which may have been the first episodes most fans saw. The build-up to the show was pretty exciting and clearly Fox knew what they had - in addition to Saturday morning, they aired episodes in prime time too. Having just recently rewatched some of those early episodes I can say that they mostly hold up incredibly well, just like these figures.

For a figure that's over 30 years old, the materials have held up incredibly well. The only thing that was irksome were the claws - both were a little sticky. You can wipe it off, but it's weird for a figure that feels brand-new. The whip and the cat feel exactly like I remember them being the day I opened the packaging. It's impressive that she still holds up so well, and since she doesn't have foot peg holes, she's unlikely to stand up so well.

As the 1980s went on, Kenner started to experiment with action features. This Catwoman repurposes the same kind of whipping arm you'd seen earlier with figures like Batman Returns Catwoman, which cost about the same - but didn't include as much stuff. This Catwoman kept the whip and whipping, but her big claw played up a tool on the show - glass-cutting claws - with an added cat giving her a pal to steal jewels. Cute! The whip is a flexible rubbery whip - nothing too special, but if you took care of it, it held up to time. The arm springs forward nicely when you lift it up, bringing it down with a satisfying speed but no crack. Nobody's breaking the speed of sound with this toy.

In terms of sculpting, Kenner nailed it again. I'd love to know if it's because they just loved the show so much, or because of licensor notes. The gray outfit is tight, with black boots and gloves - neither of which are shiny, but if they were it might sell the whole notion of her Batman Returns dominatrix outfit a little too much. It still hits those notes, but matte black and an average gray don't exactly connote the kind of fun you forbid your kids from having which only makes them more interested as time goes on. Since there's not much to paint, everything looks great - her yellow belt circles are perfect, her mask is great, her red lips and green eyes pop. There are even black details in her cat ears. Due to the plastic used, everything has a pleasing shadow bringing out the very limited detail of this stylized figure. If a toy company released this figure today, other than the articulation, I think people would still be quite impressed.

DC Direct and McFarlane Toys have done newer versions of the character, but so did McDonald's. The design is so good that even the cheap figures look excellent, so I'd recommend the Kenner version (or really, any of them) as display figures. You might want to get some sort of waist stand for this one, though. She's pretty inexpensive, so if you happen upon her at a fair price do yourself a favor and give her a look.
